Maze Sets School Career Record In Loss, Game 2 Suspended In Sixth

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Samford senior center fielder Shelby Maze set the school record career for hits with two hits in the first game of Saturday's Southern Conference doubleheader with Western Carolina. The Bulldogs dropped the first game, 7-2. The second game was suspended with one out in the top of the sixth inning, with Samford leading, 7-2. The second game will be completed Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
In the first game, Maze went 2-for-2 with an RBI. The two hits gave Maze 275 for her career, eclipsing the previous record of 274, set by current Samford assistant coach Megan Dowdy (2013-16). Hannah Trombley went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
 
Taylor DeCelles (5-12) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up five runs, just two earned, on five hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford. McKenna Gillespie tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on one hit.
 
For Western Carolina, Hunter Gibbons went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Erica Hayes and Ashlyn Long also homered in the game for the Catamounts. Haley Brogden (3-4) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to pick up the win for Western Carolina.
 
Western Carolina jumped on top with a run in the first inning on Hayes' solo home run. The Catamounts added a run in the fourth inning and three more runs in the fifth inning to make the 5-0.
 
Samford plated a run in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth. Maze's record-breaking hit drove in the run in the sixth inning to cut the WCU lead to 5-2. The Catamounts added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 7-2.
 
In game two, Samford plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a home run by Lexie Higgins. After Western Carolina scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, Samford added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth inning to stretch its lead to 7-1. Western Carolina added a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-2, but the game was suspended when storms hit the area with one out in the top of the sixth.
 
The second game will resume Sunday at 1 p.m., with game three to follow. Links to follow both games are below.
