AUBURN, Ala. -- The Samford University track and field teams continued their successful spring seasons this weekend as the Bulldogs registered seven top-five performances at the highly-competitive Tiger Track Classic, which was hosted by Auburn University at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
The annual event featured a large, talented field.
Along with Samford and the homestanding Auburn Tigers, the two-day competition included AU-Montgomery, UAB (W), Alabama State, Arkansas State, UA-Huntsville, Boston University, Columbus State, Cornell (M), Florida State, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Georgia State (W), Indiana State, Lamar, Louisiana, New Orleans, South Alabama, Troy, Quinnipiac (W) and Western Michigan (W).
Samford's Tray Oates highlighted the weekend's competition by winning the pole vault event with a facility-record height of 5.60 meters, or 18-feet, 4.5 inches, while Abbey Zane, Dillon Dean, Josh Salter, Selena Popp, Arsene Guillorel and Hugh Duggan all earned top-five finishes.
Additionally, Samford's Marquis Barnes (long jump), Emmanuel Tait (110-meter hurdles), Maggie Johnston (discus) and Matt Cahoon (discus) each placed sixth in their respective events.
Oates, the Bulldogs' senior All-American, tallied a height of 5.50 meters in regulation and finished the competition tied for first place with Sean Collins of South Alabama. The pair then held a jump off, in which Oates cleared 5.60 meters to set the facility record, while Collins came up short. With his record-setting performance, Oates took first place in the event.
Additionally, Samford's Duggan earned fifth place in the pole vault with a height of 4.95 meters. He finished just out of fourth place behind Kyle Baudoin of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Some of the Bulldogs' top finishers also proved to be Zane in the women's 5000-meter run and Dean in the men's 5000-meter run. Zane notched a second-place finish with a time of 17:29.76 in the competition, while Dean placed third in 14:51.71 on the men's side.
Continuing Samford's distance success this weekend was Salter in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Salter, the Bulldogs' talented senior from Johns Creek, Georgia, placed third in the event with a time of 9:20.20. He finished ahead of Georgia Tech's Sam Costa and Indiana State's Luke Kerstiens to round out the top five in the competition.
Samford's Popp also garnered a third-place finish at the Tiger Track Classic. Popp, the Bulldogs' dynamic junior All-SoCon performer from Hixon, Tennessee, scored 5283 points in the heptathlon to take third in the event.
Guillorel, the Bulldogs' talented senior All-American, placed fourth in the men's 1500-meter run, but could have easily finished at least second in the event. Down the stretch, he was barely edged out by Florida State's Michael Hall and Auburn's Wesley Curles by just .14 seconds. Guillorel posted a time of 3:45.18, while Hall finished in 3:45.04 and Curles notched a 3:45.15.
The Samford University track and field teams will continue play in their 2018 outdoor seasons next week at the high-profile Georgia Tech Invite, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility in Atlanta, Georgia.
