GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Samford softball team dropped a 12-0 decision in five innings in the Bulldogs' series finale at Furman Sunday afternoon.
Shelby Maze and Whitney Hinton led Samford at the plate, each going 1-for-2. McKenna Gillespie (3-10) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss. Taylor DeCelles and Emily Barnett also pitched in the game for the Bulldogs.
Furman was led offensively by Hannah Reynolds, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI. Marissa Guimbarda also homered twice, going 2-for-3 with five RBI. Lindsey Bert (23-8) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win in the circle for the Paladins.
Furman scored three runs in the first inning, with two coming on a home run by Reynolds in the first inning. The Paladins added four runs in the third inning on a grand slam by Guimbarda for a 7-0 lead. Furman added five runs in the fourth inning, with both Reynolds and Guimbarda hitting home runs to make the score 12-0.
With the loss, Samford falls to 17-34 overall and 6-7 in Southern Conference play. Furman improves to 36-12 overall and 8-5 in league games.
Samford will wrap up its regular season by hosting UNCG in a three-game series next weekend. The Bulldogs and Spartans are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
