GREENSBORO, N.C.— The fifth-seeded Samford softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to fourth-seeded Chattanooga in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday morning at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Samford falls to 18-37 with the loss. The Bulldogs will play an elimination game Thursday at 7 p.m. (CT) against a to-be-determined opponent. Chattanooga improves to 26-28 with the win. The Mocs will take on top-seeded UNCG Thursday at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
In the loss for Samford, Shelby Maze went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Hannah Trombley drove in Samford's lone run, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
McKenna Gillespie (3-12) took the loss in the circle for Samford, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Taylor DeCelles relieved Gillespie, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing no runs on just three hits.
For Chattanooga, Brook Womack went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Amanda Beltran also homered, going 1-for-2 with one RBI. Celie Hudson (13-13) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits to earn the win in the circle. Allison Swinford pitched the final inning, giving up one hit to earn her third save of the season.
Samford jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning. Maze led the inning off with a single, and then moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Ashlyn Barnes. Maze then advanced to third base on a ground out by Lexie Higgins. After Madison Couch walked, Trombley reached base on an infield single, driving in Maze for a 1-0 Samford lead.
Chattanooga answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Womack hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Mocs a 2-1 lead. Chattanooga then added a run in the second inning when Beltram hit a solo home run to right-center field for a 3-1 UTC lead.
Samford had a few chances in the remaining innings to close the gap, but the Bulldogs left a combined nine runners on base, and the Mocs held on for the 3-1 win.
