LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford football team fell in overtime at VMI, 48-41 Saturday afternoon at Foster Stadium.
The Bulldogs led, 41-38, and Samford's
Coutrell Plair tackled VMI's Alex Ramsey in bounds and the clock appeared to run out ending the game. However, it was determined the clock had not been stopped for the first down, so VMI had one more play with five seconds left. On that last play, VMI's Grant Clemmons kicked a career-long 56-yard field goal to send the game in to overtime, tied at 41-41.
VMI took possession first in the extra period, and on its first play, Ramsey scored on a 25-yard run for his sixth touchdown of the game for a 48-41 lead. The VMI defense held Samford from scoring on its possession and the game ended in a VMI victory.
For the game, Samford's
Chris Oladokun completed 31-of-46 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 84 yards on 16 carries.
Montrell Washington caught eight passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Washington also rushed six times for 61 yards and a touchdown.
John Staton led the Samford defense with 12 tackles, including five solo stops.
Nick Barton had 11 tackles, six solo.
Mitchell Fineran was good on both of his field goal attempts, making kicks of 23 and 45 yards on the day.
For VMI, Ramsey rushed 37 times for 163 yards and six touchdowns. Reece Udinski completed 37-of-46 passes for 390 yards for the Keydets.
VMI struck first when Ramsey scored on a one-yard run to give the Keydets a 7-0 lead with 8:21 left in the first quarter. Samford answered on its next drive when Washington scored on a 10-yard run to knot the score at 7-7 with 5:35 to go in the first period. Ramsey then scored from two yards out to give VMI a 14-7 lead with 2:57 to go in the opening period.
Samford's Oladokun hit Washington for a 15-yard touchdown pass to tie the score again at 14-14 with just six seconds to go in the first quarter. Ramsey then scored from one yard out to give the Keydets a 21-14 advantage at the 9:35 mark in the second quarter.
VMI's Rohan Martin fumbled a Samford punt and
Torrence Pollard recovered in the end zone for a Samford touchdown to once again tie the game at 21-21 with 8:02 left in the second quarter. Ramsey scored on a five-yard run for a 28-21 VMI lead with 3:00 left in the second quarter. Fineran kicked a 23-yard field goal to cut the lead to 28-24 with 11 seconds left before halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Oladokun hit
Jay Stanton for a 19-yard touchdown pass on a flea-flicker to give Samford a 31-28 lead with 9:25 left in the third quarter. Samford added to its lead when Oladokun connected with
Chris Shelling for a 13-yard touchdown pass to push Samford's lead to 38-28 with 1:39 to go in the third quarter. The drive was extended when defensive lineman
Brett Granger ran for 22 yards on a fake punt to give the Bulldogs a first down.
VMI's Clemmons kicked a 33-yard field goal to cut the Samford lead to 38-31 with 13:03 to go in the fourth quarter. Ramsey scored his fifth touchdown of the game on a one-yard run to tie the score at 38-38 with 4:16 to go in the fourth quarter. Fineran kicked a 45-yard field goal with 41 seconds left to give Samford a 41-38 lead and set the stage for Clemmons' game-tying kick and overtime.
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference games. VMI improves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in league games.
Samford will take the next week off from competition. The Bulldogs will next play on Oct. 26 when Samford hosts ETSU at 12 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
