Football Falls At Home To #14 Furman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford football team dropped a 58-14 decision to 14th-ranked Furman Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman takes over sole possession of first place in the league at 4-2 overall and 3-0 in league games.


 
"We couldn't stop them, we couldn't move the ball on them and they were winning up front," Samford head coach Chris Hatcher said. "They have a really good team. You tip your cap to (Furman Head Coach) Clay Hendrix and his bunch, they came in here and steamrolled us today."
 
For Samford in the game, Jay Stanton rushed eight times for 77 yards. Chris Oladokun completed 13-of-21 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. John Staton led the Samford defense with 13 tackles, including eight solo stops.
 
For Furman, Devin Wynn rushed 14 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Darren Grainger completed 6-of-9 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns, including three to Thomas Gordon.
 
Samford got on the scoreboard on the game's opening drive when Montrell Washington scored on an eight-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 12:02 to go in the first quarter. On Furman's first offensive play from scrimmage, Wynn ran 75 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 with 11:49 left in the first quarter.
 
Furman took the lead for good when Grainger hit Gordon for a 38-yard touchdown pass to give the Paladins a 14-7 lead with 8:16 to go in the first period. Furman's Devin Abrams scored on a two-yard run to make the score 21-7 with 4:25 to play in the first quarter. Wynn scored on his second long run of the game, this one from 89 yards out to give Furman a 28-7 lead with 1:06 to go in the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Grainger hit Gordon for two more scores, one for 17 yards and one for 25 yards. For Samford, Oladokun connected with Michael Vice for a four-yard touchdown and Furman had a 42-14 lead at halftime.
 
Wynn scored on a 61-yard pass from Grainger early in the third quarter to make the score 49-14. Grayson Atkins of Furman kicked a 46-yard field goal to give Furman a 52-14 lead with 5:28 left in the third quarter. The lone fourth-quarter score came on a nine-yard run by Furman's Wayne Anderson, and the extra point was no good to make the final score 58-14.
 
Samford will travel to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI on Saturday, Oct. 12. The game is set for a 12:30 p.m. (CT) start.
