Softball Splits Doubleheader With Mercer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team split its Southern Conference doubleheader with Mercer Saturday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium. Mercer took game one, 5-4 in eight innings, but Samford bounced back to win the second game by a score of 7-4.
 
The split keeps Samford in first place in the Southern Conference standings. The Bulldogs have a record of 21-26 overall and 10-4 in SoCon play. Mercer is now 21-24 overall and 7-4 in league games.
 
GAME 1: MERCER 5, SAMFORD 4 (8 INN.)
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Timberlyn Shurbutt went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead Samford in the first game.
  • Kathryn Jackson went 2-for-2 for the Bulldogs.
  • Taylor DeCelles (7-10) pitched 8.0 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
  • For Mercer, Kenlie Harvey homered and drove in two runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Micayla Rood, Allie Jones and Danielle Castleberry had two hits each for the Bears.
  • Lynn Gardner (9-8) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on five hits to earn the win for Mercer.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Mercer jumped on top first with four runs in the top of the first inning.
  • Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead to 4-1. Hannah Trombley scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Royalty for Samford's first run of the contest.
  • The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Shurbutt hit a two-run home run to left field to bring Samford to within one run.
  • Samford knotted the score at 4-4 when Merritt Cahoon singled to drive in Shurbutt in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Rood scored when Abby Walsh reached base on a Samford error, giving Mercer the 5-4 win.
 
GAME 2: SAMFORD 7, MERCER 4

  • Whitney Hinton went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Samford in the second game.
  • Shurbutt and Royalty had two hits each for Samford in the win.
  • Ashlyn Barnes drove in two runs, going 1-for-2 at the plate in the second game.
  • McKenna Gillespie (5-3) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win in the circle for Samford.
  • DeCelles picked up her first save of the season, coming in to get the final out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • For Mercer in Game 2, Walsh, Harvey and Shaila Warren each homered.
  • Gardner (9-9) took the loss, pitching 1.0 inning, giving up four runs on three hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford took a 1-0 lead when Trombley doubled to drive in Madison Couch in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Mercer tied the score on a solo home run by Walsh in the top of the second inning.
  • Samford took the lead again in the bottom of the second inning when Cahoon singled to drive in Shurbutt for a 2-1 Samford lead.
  • The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Barnes singled to drive in Shurbutt for a two-run Samford lead.
  • Mercer came back with three runs in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of home runs to take a 4-3 advantage.
  • Samford answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 7-4. Barnes and Maddie Dorsett drove in a run each, and Hinton hit a two-run homer as the Bulldogs pulled away for the win.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
