Football Opens SoCon Play With 21-14 Win At No. 21 Wofford

BOX SCORE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
The Samford football team opened Southern Conference play with a 21-14 win at 21st-ranked Wofford Saturday night at Gibbs Stadium.

With the win Samford improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference play. Wofford falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league games.

"I'm really proud of our team," Samford head coach Chris Hatcher said. "To go on the road for three-straight weeks to start the season is always very difficult, especially to come play a team of Wofford's caliber. We've worked hard, we haven't complained, we haven't pointed fingers, we've just kept getting better and better every day in practice and it really showed today."

Quarterback Chris Oladokun completed 17-of-25 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Oladokun also led the team in rushing with 12 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Robert Adams caught three passes for 51 yards and a touchdown, including a key 39-yard reception on the game's final drive to help seal the win.

On defense for Samford, John Staton led the team with 10 tackles, including five solo stops. Nathan East and Armond Lloyd tallied seven tackles each.

For Wofford, quarterback Joe Newman rushed 16 times for 105 yards. Mason Alstatt and D.T. Wilson had one interception each.

Wofford got on the scoreboard first when Nathan Walker scored on a one-yard run to give the Terriers a 7-0 lead with 7:47 left in the first quarter. Samford answered on its next drive when Oladokun connected with Adams for a 12-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 7-7 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.

On the first drive of the second quarter, Wofford's Walker scored on another one-yard run to make the score 14-7 with 9:59 left in the quarter. Samford's Jay Stanton scored on a six-yard run to tie the game again at 14-14 with 7:38 left in the second period.

After the Samford defense stopped Wofford on the opening drive of the third quarter, the Bulldogs took the lead for good. Oladokun scored on a 30-yard run to give Samford a 21-14 lead with 10:13 left in the period.

Wofford drove to the Samford seven-yard line with 3:14 to play. The Samford defense, however, stopped the Terriers on a fourth-and-two play, ending the threat. The Bulldog offense was able to run out the final 3:14 from there to end the game.

Samford will host Alabama A&M in the team's home opener next Saturday, Sept. 21. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
