Samford Cruises To First Regular-Season Win Of McMillan Era, 98-73 Over Covenant

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford men's basketball team opened up a big halftime lead and never looked back on its way to a 98-73 win over Covenant College Tuesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center. The victory marked the first regular-season win of the Bucky McMillan era of Samford basketball.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 1-1 with the win. The game counted as an exhibition game for Covenant.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Jacob Tryon led Samford in the win with 17 points and eight rebounds.
  • Richardson Maitre and A.J. Staton-McCray scored 15 points each for Samford.
  • Logan Dye tallied 14 points, while Christian Guess added 12 points and eight rebounds.
  • For Covenant, Chris Barnette tallied a game-high 20 points.
  • As a team, Samford shot 55.1 percent from the floor, while holding Covenant to just 35.9 percent shooting.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped out to an early 11-6 lead with 16:52 to go in the first half after a layup by Tryon.
  • Covenant fought back to tie the game at 20-20 with 11:55 to go in the first half after a pair of free throws by Luke Touliatos.
  • With the score tied at 28-28, Samford went on an 8-0 run to take a 36-28 lead with 8:12 to go in the opening half after a three-point play by Guess.
  • Samford extended its lead to 15 points at 44-29 with3:49 left in the half after a layup by Tryon.
  • The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to as many as 23 points and the team took a 54-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford pushed its lead to 29 points at 65-36 with 15:47 left in the game following a layup by Jaron Rillie.
  • Covenant fought back to cut the lead to 20 points at 79-59 with 9:22 to go after a jumper by Touliatos.
  • The Scots closed to within 19 points, but Samford stretched the lead back out to 25 at 95-70 with 1:52 to go after a jumper by Guess.
  • The Bulldogs came away with the 98-73 victory.
