BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team opened Southern Conference play with an 84-71 win over VMI Wednesday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in Southern Conference play. VMI falls to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in league contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams traded baskets early on in the first half.
- Samford was able to build a 24-19 lead with 12:28 to go in the first half after a jumper by Logan Dye.
- VMI answered with a 6-0 run to take a 25-24 lead with 10:56 left in the first half following a free throw by Ta'vonne Bond.
- Samford then went on a 7-0 run to take a 31-25 lead with 10:00 to go in the opening period after a layup by Jalen Dupree.
- The Bulldogs opened up a 15-point lead at 47-32 with 2:13 left in the half after a layup by Triston Chambers.
- Samford led by as many as 19 points in the first half, and the Bulldogs took a 56-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- After Samford pushed its lead to 21 points at 58-37, VMI went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 58-45 with 15:42 to play after a pair of free throws by Trey Bonham.
- The Keydets fought back to cut the Samford lead to five points at 69-64 with 5:16 left after a dunk by Kamdyn Curfman.
- Samford pushed the lead back out to 10 points at 74-64 with 4:21 to go after a three-pointer by Parks.
- VMI cut the lead to nine points, but could get no closer as Samford held on for the 84-71 win.
