Serup Shoots Bulldogs Past Mercer 60-54

MACON, Ga. – Paige Serup scored a season-high 14 points, including six in the decisive 4th quarter, to help lead the Samford University women's basketball team to a 60-54 victory at Mercer University (6-19, 3-7 SoCon) on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Hawkins Arena. The victory moved the Bulldogs (12-13, 7-3 SoCon) back into a 1st place tie in the Southern Conference standings with Wofford.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sarah Myers finished the game with 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, her 20th double-digit performance of the season.
  • Natalie Armstrong collected her 2nd double-double for Samford with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Serup was 5-of-8 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • Charity Brown closed the day with 10 points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.
  • Samford out rebounded the Bears 45-33, including 16 offensive boards.
  • Mercer placed three Bears in double figures, led by Shannon Titus with 13 points.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Led by Amoria Neal-Tysor's five points, Mercer led Samford 14-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Sarah Myers led Samford and all scorers with seven points.
  • The Bulldogs locked down Mercer in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Bears 15-7 to take a 26-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Mercer closed the gap in the 3rd quarter, trailing the Bulldogs 35-34 heading into the 4th quarter. The Bears' Jaron Dougherty chipped in four of their 13 points during the period.
  • The pace of play picked up in the final period, with Mercer taking the 37-35 lead with 9:38 to go off Neal-Tysor's 3-pointer.
  • Back-to-back-to-back buckets by Natalie Armstrong, Raven Omar and Sarah Myers put Samford back up 41-37 with 6:32 remaining in the game.
  • Paige Serup's 3-pointer, her third of the game, with 3:45 on the clock put Samford up eight, 47-39, on the Bears.
  • Dougherty cut it to four for Mercer, 49-45, with back-to-back jumpers with 1:44 to play in the game.
  • A pair of free throws from Myers and Serup's fourth 3-pointer of the game extended Samford's lead back to nine, 54-45, with 1:02 remaining.
  • Samford iced away the 60-54 victory from the free throw line in the waning moments of the contest.
  • Mercer's Shannon Titus hit an uncontested lay-up at the buzzer to make the final margin six points.
