BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team split the opening two games of the Samford Softball Tournament taking down DePaul, 9-1 in six innings, and dropping the evening matchup with #11 Kentucky, 7-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Against DePaul, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead with an RBI from senior Whitney Hinton.
- In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs strengthened their lead with home runs from Mekhi Mayfield and Whitney Hinton giving Samford the 5-0 lead.
- Hinton padded her stat line with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, while Ryan Brzozoski drove in the walk-off runs to end the game in six innings.
- Kentucky used back-to-back multi-run innings to take a 7-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Timberlyn Shurbutt sent a pitch sailing over the left field wall cutting the Bulldogs' deficit to five at 7-2.
- The Bulldogs added two final runs in the sixth inning, but the Wildcats took the nightcap, 7-4.
IN THE CIRCLE
- Against DePaul, freshman Abby Swaney (3-0) made the fourth start of her career giving up one run on seven hits in 6.0 innings pitched to earn the win.
- For DePaul, Tori Meyer (0-1) took the loss, tossing 1.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits.
- Against Kentucky, redshirt-freshman Megan Robertson (1-3) got the nod in the circle and gave up seven runs on nine hits in her 3.2 innings pitched in taking the loss.
- Kentucky's Meghan Schorman (4-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to earn the win.
- UK's Miranda Stoddard came in to get the final two outs of the game to pick up the save.
NOTABLES
- Hinton went 3-for-4 against DePaul with four RBI and two home runs.
- Mayfield's home run in the second inning against DePaul was her first of the season.
- Shurbutt's home run against Kentucky is her first of the season, eighth of her career.
- Amanda Briskin went 3-for-4 against the Wildcats with three singles on the night.
