Softball Splits Day Two Of FIU Tournament

MIAMI, Fla. – It was an up-and-down day for the Samford University softball program who split a day-night doubleheader on Day Two of the FIU Tournament, Saturday. The Bulldogs captured a dramatic 10-9 win over Ball State during the afternoon before dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to host Florida International in the evening.

- The Bulldogs capitalized on five Ball State errors and pounded out 10 hits en route to victory,
- Whitney Hinton put on an incredible display at the plate, recording a 4-4 day including two doubles and two RBI. Hinton was the catalyst for a strong offensive effort from the Bulldogs.
- Amanda Briskin chipped in with two hits and three runs scored in the leadoff spot for Samford.
- Kolby Holcombe produced a two-run RBI single in the first inning that set the tone for the Bulldogs offensively.
- Merritt Cahoon, Maddie Dorsett and Grace Dabbs each picked up a hit in the win. Dorsett and Dabbs each drove in one run for Samford in the victory.
- Megan Robertson (2-4) picked up her second win of the season coming on in relief of Taylor DeCelles. Robertson tossed a solid 2.1 innings allowing three earned runs while striking out one. DeCelles recorded three punch outs in her 3.0 innings of work.
- Freshman Abby Swaney recorded her first save in a Bulldog uniform. She shutout the Cardinal in the final frame for a perfect 1.0 innings of work, with one strikeout.

NOTABLES
- It was tough sledding for the Samford offense in the nightcap recording six hits, but only able to plate one run. Briskin (2-4, one run) had another strong outing in the leadoff spot.
- Timberlyn Shurbutt, Ryan Brzozoski, Dorsett and Hinton each recorded a hit in the setback.
- Swaney got the nod in the circle and pitched a solid 6.0 innings , allowing just one run while striking out four. DeCelles (4-3) took the tough luck for Samford.
- Samford will wrap up play in Miami with two more contests tomorrow. The Bulldogs will take on Ball State at 8:30 a.m. and will battle Big Ten-powerhouse Maryland at 11 a.m.
