BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned its first win of the 2021 season with a 5-2 victory over North Alabama Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 1-4 on the season. North Alabama falls to 0-4 with the loss.
"It was great to get outdoors today and compete," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "Eladio, Tomas, and Dali, really stepped up their games today with convincing wins. Victor did a really good job of staying composed mentally and playing some of his better tennis in the second set tie-breaker. We need to continue to compete with high energy and a high compete level each day. Looking forward to competing next weekend again."
Samford took the doubles points with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. At No. 2,
Eladio Fabregas and
Tomas Santantonio defeated Jamie Bixby and Cade Reasons, 6-0. On the No. 3 doubles court,
Mohammed Ali Bellalouna and
Matthew Gooch earned a 6-4 victory over Andreas Hansen and Tim Heslin. The match on the No. 1 doubles court was not finished.
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to earn the 5-2 victory. At No. 1,
Victor Chaw defeated Carlos Matarredona, 6-2, 7-6. At No. 2 singles, Fabregas defeated Hansen, 6-2, 6-1. On the No. 4 singles court, Santantonio defeated Kyle Johnson, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, Bellalouna defeated Reasons, 6-1, 6-2.
Samford will play at Mississippi State on Sunday, Jan. 31. The match is set for a 5 p.m. start from Starkville, Miss.
