Cournoyer’s Career High Leads Women’s Hoops Past Furman, 78-72

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford junior guard Andrea Cournoyer scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Bulldog women's basketball team to a 78-72 Southern Conference victory over Furman Thursday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
Cournoyer's 34 points is just one point away from the school record of 35 set by Emily London at Davidson in 2010. With the win, Samford improves to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in SoCon play. Furman falls to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.

  • Cournoyer made 10-of-20 shots from the floor, and she was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line in the game. She also had seven steals in the win.
  • Annie Ramil followed with 17 points and eight rebounds.
  • Mallory Hampton scored 11 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Raven Omar dished out six assists.
  • Tierra Hodges led Furman with 22 points.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 7:50 to go in the first quarter after a layup by Ramil.
  • Furman fought back to cut the lead to 9-8 6:01 left in the quarter following a layup by Tyah Hunter.
  • Samford stretched its lead back out to 14-8 with 4:33 left in the quarter after a basket by Audra Leipold.
  • Samford held a 20-17 advantage at the end of the first period.
  • Furman came back to take a 22-21 lead with 8:40 left in the second quarter after a layup by Greyson Boone.
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Cournoyer and Hampton gave Samford a 27-22 lead with 7:35 to go in the second period.
  • Furman fought back again to take a 35-30 lead with 2:53 left in the second quarter following a basket by Hodges
  •  The Paladins took a 35-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • After Furman pushed its lead out to six points at 39-33, Samford fought back to take a 45-43 lead with 3:21 left in the third quarter after a three-point play by Cournoyer.
  • With Samford leading, 45-44, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 51-44 with 1:27 to go in the third quarter after a layup by Cournoyer.
  • Samford held a 54-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • Furman opened the fourth quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 58-56 lead with 6:32 left in the period after a basket by Hodges.
  • With Samford trailing, 63-61, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to take a 68-63 lead with 1:47 to go in the fourth quarter following a jumper by Cournoyer.
  • Samford pushed its lead out to six points at 72-66 after two Cournoyer free throws with 39 seconds left.
  • The Bulldogs held on for the 78-72 victory.
