Volleyball Sweeps Mercer In Dig Orange Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. 
– The Samford volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) win over Mercer Wednesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
The match was Samford's annual Dig Orange match to support cancer research, with all donations going to the American Leukemia Foundation. With the win, Samford improves to 9-17 overall and 8-7 in Southern Conference play. Mercer falls to 15-11 overall and 11-4 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
Samford jumped out to an 8-4 lead to start the first set on a service ace by Emily Naubert. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 10-5, but Mercer scored the next seven points to take a 12-10 lead and force a Samford timeout. Samford came back to tie the scored at 15-15 on a kill by Kenya McQuirter. With the score tied at 18-18, Samford scored five of the next six points to take a 24-19 lead. Mercer, however, fought back to cut the lead to one at 24-23, but a kill by Lauren Deaton gave Samford the 25-23 set victory.
 
Mercer opened the second set with a 5-1 lead on a kill by Rayanne Oliveira. Samford fought back to tie the score at 6-6 on a service ace by Sarah Hayes Farley. Samford took its first lead of the set at 13-12 on a kill by McQuirter. With the score knotted at 19-19, Samford scored five of the next six points to take a 24-20 lead, and the Bulldogs took the set by a score of 25-22.
 
The Bears again jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. Samford answered with a 5-0 run to take a 6-5 lead on a kill by Kate Morgan. Samford built a 15-11 lead following a Mercer attack error. The teams traded the next several points until Mercer was able to close to within two points at 19-17. Samford, however, was able to extend its lead back out to 21-17 on a service ace by Morgan. With Samford leading, 21-18, the Bulldogs scored four of the next seven points to take the set, 25-21 and the match, 3-0.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • McQuirter led Samford with 15 kills.
  • Deaton followed with 12 kills and six digs.
  • Andie Salasky led the team in digs with 17.
  • Kayla Keshock tallied 33 assists for the Bulldogs.
