BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball Team will embark on a week-long mission trip to Brazil in March of 2024, Head Coach
Keylor Chan announced on Monday.
"Our trip to Brazil will be the program's first mission/volley tour," Chan said. "We were set for this tour in the summer of 2020, but due to the Covid pandemic, the mission was canceled. As a staff, we felt this was a perfect time to set the mission in motion again."
During the trip, the Bulldogs will visit Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo. The trip will feature a handful of matches against local teams, in addition to community outreach activities and mission work.
The Bulldogs will depart from Birmingham on March 1 and return on March 10.
"Experiencing volleyball on the world stage is special," Chan said. "It broadens perspectives and connects in ways that deepen our roots as human beings. Brazil is a world leader in volleyball and will provide a broad range of experiences that will surely help the program grow. It was also critical to build a mission component into the trip and Brazil has many opportunities to share our faith with others."
Volleyball has a long and rich history in Brazil that dates back to the 1800s. The Brazilian women's national team has won two Olympic Gold Medals in the last 15 years (2008, 2012) while the men have won three gold medals since 1992.
"Personally, I'm excited to lead our group abroad," Chan said. "We will need support from all our stakeholders in Samford Volleyball to make this happen, but I'm confident all will see the value and help make this experience possible."
