Bulldogs Fall On PKs To St. John's In NCAA Second Round

DURHAM, N.C. – The Samford women's soccer team fell in a penalty kick shootout to the Red Storm of St. John's in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night, despite battling back for two thrilling equalizers for a 2-2 match decision through 110 minutes at Koskinen Stadium.

BOX SCORE (PDF)

"I thought it would be an even match. I really thought if we scored two, we would probably win it, but we both scored two, so we go to penalty kicks. Penalties are just a cruel way to end it, but full credit to St. John's. They are a very good team," said Todd Yelton, head coach.

"I think the thing about our group and what they demonstrated in every situation, is that they were resilient. When teams go down, they find it difficult to comeback from, so I would say that this group is really special. We tend to say before each game that it's just another opportunity to prove how much we love one another. You can say it, but you have to demonstrate it, and I think this group did."

KEY PLAYS
  • A breakdown in the back put St. John's on the board first just 14 minutes into the match after Jessica Garziano slipped a through ball to Nicole Gordon out on the right flank. Gordon found herself alone with Morgan McAslan in front of goal, slotting the ball in the lower left corner netting for the early lead.
  • Alyssa Conarton broke through for the Bulldogs at the 28th minute mark, finding the back of the net after a laser of a shot to the upper left 90 off a free kick from 25 yards out.
  • After returning from the break, the Red Storm responded with a set piece goal of their own to regain the lead in the 51st minute. Zsani Kajan sent a ball to the back post where she found fellow teammate Shannon Aviza who headed the ball straight into the upper 90 to put St. John's back in front.
  • With under 10 minutes to go in regulation, Kyla Reynolds found herself with a prime opportunity in front of goal after a quick build up out of the back for Samford. The junior striker would be pulled down inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Bulldogs. Super senior Alyssa Frazier stepped up to the line and with no hesitation, launched a shot right past SJU's keeper to make it a tie game once again.
  • Both teams would trade opportunities in both overtime periods, but none would come to fruition. This led to a penalty shootout where the Bulldogs fell by a 3-0 decision for St. John's to advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.

  • St. John's took a 15-7 advantage over Samford in shots with nine being on frame for the Red Storm with the Bulldogs having two of their own.
