Glover's 25 Powers Bulldogs Past NC A&T 77-75; Samford To Face McNeese State Saturday

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Ques Glover scored a career-high 25 points and Jaden Campbell added 15, as the Samford University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire on Friday, Nov. 26 to advance to the final round of the Emerald Coast Classic with a 77-75 victory over North Carolina A&T (1-5) at The Arena. Demetric Horton (24) and Marcus Watson (24) led the Aggies in scoring.
 
The Bulldogs (4-1) face McNeese State (3-3) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Cowboys rallied to defeat Saint Francis-Brooklyn, 71-59, in the first game of the day at the Emerald Coast Classic on Friday. Brendan Medley-Bacon led McNeese and all scorers with 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bulldogs dominated the first 3:25 of the game, racing out to a 10-0 lead before North Carolina A&T was forced to call a timeout. Glover had a quick four to lead Samford.
  • Out of the timeout, the Aggies were able to slow down the Bulldogs' offensive pace and claw back into the contest by outscoring Samford 11-8 from 15:27 to 11:29. North Carolina A&T trailed by seven, 18-11 at the media timeout. Demetric Horton had eight of the Aggies' 11 during the run.
  • After NCAT had cut the deficit to four with 9:30 to play in the half, back-to-back 3-pointers by Jaden Campbell and Glover extended Samford's lead to 10, 26-16, with 8:43 remaining in the half.
  • The Aggies reeled-off a quick 5-0 run before the 7:23 media timeout to cut the margin to five, 27-22.
  • Campbell continued his hot start his third and fourth 3-pointers of the half, as Samford led 35-27 with 3:44 to play in the first half.
  • Both teams managed three points over the final 3:30 of the first half, as the Bulldogs carried a 38-30 lead into the locker room. NCAT was one for its' last eight from the field at the end of the half.
  • Glover led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the first half followed by Campbell with 12. Jermaine Marshall cleared nine rebounds in the first while chipping in three points.  
  • Horton's 13 paced the Aggies with Marcus Watson adding nine points and Kameron Langley handing out seven assists.
  • Samford shot 39 percent (12-of-31) in the first half with North Carolina A&T connecting on 41 percent (12-of-29). The Bulldogs made seven 3-pointers to the Aggies four and Samford dominated the glass 23-14 in the first half.
  • Samford found the torrid pace it began the game with again at the start of the second half, as the Bulldogs built a 13-point lead, 49-36, at the 15:56 media timeout. The Bulldogs canned three 3-pointers during the stretch including one each by Quinn Rickey, Jacob Tryon, and Cooper Kaifes.
  • The Bulldogs maintained a 10-point edge, 55-45, at the 11:03 media timeout. Samford had connected on six made field goals at that point in the half with five coming from 3-point range.
  • A personal 5-0 run by Marshall out of the timeout pushed the Samford lead to 15, 60-45, with 9:46 to go.
  • After the Bulldogs held the Aggies scoreless for over three minutes, North Carolina A&T answered with a 10-2 run to cut it to 64-55 with 5:27 to play. Watson had seven of the nine for the Aggies.
  • With 3:30 to go, the Aggies had cut the deficit to five, 68-63. NCAT had outscored Samford 18-8 over the last 6:17 of the game.
  • Glover slowed the run with a pair of free throws for the Bulldogs, but Horton hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game to cut it to four, 70-66, with 2:37 left on the clock.
  • David Beaty's 3-pointer, his first of the game, made it a one possession contest for the Aggies, 72-69, with 1:42 left in the second half.
  • After a jumper by Langley in the lane cut it to one, 72-71, Glover's 17-foot jumper pushed Samford's lead back to three, 74-71, with 43 seconds to play.
  • Wesley Filmore's dunk with 22 seconds to go once again put the Aggies within one, 74-73.
  • Against immense pressure, Samford's Glover got the ball inbounds before being fouled. The sophomore drained both free throws to make it a 3-point game, 76-73.
  • NCAT's Beaty canned a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to get it back to one, 76-75.
  • Marshall was 1-of-2 at the line in Samford's final scoring chance of the game.
  • The Aggies last possession was disrupted by the Bulldogs defense to claim the 77-75 victory.  
  • Samford finished the game shooting 43 percent (24-of-56) including 39 percent (12-of-31) from 3-point range and 81 percent (17-of-21) at the line. North Carolina A&T shot 45 percent on 27-of-60 attempts from the field including 52 percent (12-of-23) from 3-point range.
  • Glover finished the game with a career-high 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. The sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., also handed out seven assists.
  • Campbell, who made 5-of-8 from 3-point range, finished with a career-high 15 points as well while Marshall narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a career-best 13 rebounds.
  • Horton finished with 24 points for the Aggies with Watson chipping in 22. Langley dished out a career-high 15 assists in the loss.                       

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • The Bulldogs were 7-of-8 at the free throw line in the final 3:03 of the game and 17-of-21 for the game. Glover was a perfect 12-for-12 in the win as well.
  • Samford nailed 12-of-31 from 3-point range against the Aggies, tying for the second most made 3-pointers in a game this season. The Bulldogs were 12-of-27 in their 78-77 win at Oregon State to open the Emerald Coast Classic.
  • The Bulldogs out rebounded the Aggies 37-30.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Bulldogs and Aggies were meeting for the first time on the hardwood in the semifinal round of the Emerald Coast Classic.
  • Samford defeated Oregon State, 78-77, on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Gill Coliseum in the opening round of the Emerald Coast Classic. Ques Glover led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Jaden Campbell (14), Jermaine Marshall (14) and Cooper Kaifes (11) also turned in double digits. OSU's Warith Alatishe led all scorers with 20 points. The Bulldogs led for 38:08, trailing for a mere 22 seconds in the signature win.

UP NEXT:
  • Samford and McNeese State (3-3) square off in the final round of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday, Nov. 27. Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at The Arena in Niceville, Fla., and the game will be broadcast on Emerald Coast Classic TV.
  • The Cowboys rallied to defeat Saint Francis-Brooklyn, 71-59, in the semifinal round of the Emerald Coast Classic on Friday. Brendan Medley-Bacon led McNeese and all scorers with 21 points.
  • The Bulldogs are 2-0 all-time against McNeese State. Samford defeated the Cowboys 57-52 in the first matchup between the schools on Dec. 30, 2008, in Lake Charles, La., and followed up that performance a year later with a 68-52 win on Nov. 23, 2009, at the Pete Hanna Center.
