HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kennesaw State, fueled by a pair of 3-pointers, jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the 15:52 media timeout. Spencer Rodgers led the Owls with five points while Ques Glover had all four points for the Bulldogs.
- Logan Dye, playing in his first game of the season, drained a jump hook in the lane immediately out of the timeout to jumpstart an 8-4 run. Quinn Richey had a pair of 3-pointers in less than a minute, as the Owls led 16-12 with 14:40 to go in the first half.
- KSU's Rodgers and Samford's Richey traded 3-pointers as the Owls maintained a 19-15 edge with 11:52 left in the period.
- A quick 3-pointer by Wesley Cardet and a jump hook by Jacob Tryon gave the Bulldogs the 20-19 lead 10:31 left in the half. It was the first lead for the Bulldogs since 2-0.
- Samford used a 13-4 run from 9:18 to 5:09 to extend the lead out to eight, 35-27. Jaden Campbell nailed a pair of threes and Cooper Kaifes added one from the wing during the run.
- Rodgers slowed the Samford surge with a 3-pointer with 3:59 left in the half.
- The pace picked up offensively for both teams over the final 3:30, as the Owls outscored the Bulldogs 14-11, but Samford maintained a 46-41 lead at the break.
- With four from Cardet and a trio of layups by Jermaine Marshall, Glover, and A.J. Staton-McCray, Samford was able to keep the margin at six, 56-50, with 15:25 to play.
- KSU cut the deficit to two, 58-56, on a breakaway Kasen Jennings dunk with 13:37 left in the half.
- The Bulldogs answered with a 7-0 spurt off short jumpers by Glover and Dye, and Campbell's third 3-pointer of the game to go up nine, 65-56, at the 11:48 media timeout.
- The two teams went bucket for bucket over the next 4:02, as Samford led 74-67, at the 7:38 media timeout.
- An 11-2 run by Owls put Kennesaw State up 79-78 with 3:31 to play in the game. Burden's seven points during the stretch gave the Owls their first lead since 23-22 in the first half.
- After an Owl free throw, Glover dropped in back-to-back jumpers to give the Bulldogs an 82-80 edge with 2:12 left on the clock.
- Burden sank a pair of free throws with 1:44 on the clock to tie the game at 82-82.
- After a lane violation gave Glover a second chance at the free throw line, the sophomore guard made 1-of-2 to put the Bulldogs up 83-82 with 33 seconds to play.
- A foul by Marshall sent Demond Robinson to the line, where he made both to give the Owls an 84-83 lead.
- Glover's 15-foot jumper put the Bulldogs back up 85-84 with 6.0 seconds to go.
- Samford held the Owls off the board in their final attempts to grab the 85-84 victory.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Samford shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor in the first half, including 9-of-15 from 3-point range. Campbell, Glover and Richey had nine points apiece to lead the Bulldogs.
- Kennesaw State connected on 56 percent of its shots and were led by Rodgers' 11 points.
- Both teams closed the game shooting over 50 percent, as Samford shot 63 percent (36-of-57) and Kennesaw State (57 percent (30-of-53). The Bulldogs were also 61 percent from 3-point range after making 11-of-18 from beyond the arc.
- Glover finished the game with 22 after hitting 10-of-13 from the floor. He also had three assists.
- Dye, making his first appearance of the season, scored 12 points with three rebounds.
- Campbell added 12 points and a career-high four assists.
- Richey finished with a career-high 12 points on four made 3-pointers.
- Burden's 23 led the Owls with Youngblood and Rodgers finishing with 14 apiece.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The Bulldogs were at full strength for the first time all season, as A.J. Staton-McCray (6-5, Fr., G) and Logan Dye (6-9, Jr., F) made their debuts versus Kennesaw State. Dye finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor while Staton-McCray added five. The tandem missed the first 10 games due to injury. In 2020-21, the duo accounted for a combined 19.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.
- Samford and Kennesaw State were meeting for the sixth time on Saturday with the Bulldogs owning a 4-2 edge in the series after Saturday's win. Samford's last win over the Owls at the Pete Hanna Center came on Nov. 12, 2018, in a 74-60 victory.
