Bulldogs Take Down Rebels, 75-73

OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford men's basketball team stunned the Ole Miss Rebels with a 75-73 win Tuesday afternoon at The Sandy and John Black Pavilion.
 
The win was the first for Samford over an SEC team since defeating Auburn, 79-68 on Nov. 19, 2010, and the program's first ever win over Ole Miss. Samford now has two wins over Power 5 programs this season after a 78-77 win at Oregon State on Nov. 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The teams traded baskets early until Ole Miss was able to grab an 18-10 lead following a three-point play by Daeshun Ruffin with 12:48 to go in the first half.
  • Samford answered with a 6-0 run to cut the Rebels' lead to 18-16 with 11:03 to go in the first half after a layup by Jermaine Marshall.
  • The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at 21-20 on a layup by Ques Glover at the 8:52 mark in the first half.
  • Ole Miss came back to take a 25-21 lead on a layup by Nysier Brooks with 7:59 to go in the opening half.
  • The Rebels built their lead to 10 points at 40-30 with 1:45 to go in the first half on a three-pointer by Ruffin.
  • Samford scored six of the last eight points to end the half to cut the Rebels' lead to 42-36 heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford opened the second half with an 16-2 run to take a 52-44 lead on a three-pointer by Jaden Campbell with 15:07 to go in the second half.
  • The Bulldogs pushed their lead out to 13 points at 61-48 with 11:52 to go after a three-pointer by Campbell.
  • Ole Miss fought back to cut the lead to seven points at 62-55 with 10:21 to go after a jumper by Ruffin.
  • With Samford leading, 68-59, Ole Miss went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 68-68 following a pair of free throws by Joiner with 3:56 left.
  • Samford answered by scoring the next five points to take a 73-68 lead at the 3:08 mark after a three-pointer by Marshall.
  • Ole Miss cut the lead to 73-72, but free throws by Kaifes gave Samford a 75-72 lead with 20 seconds to go.
  • With Samford leading, 75-73, Ole Miss had one last chance, but the Rebels were unable to get the shot off in time, ending the game in a two-point Samford win.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • As a team, Samford shot 51 percent from the floor, while holding Ole Miss to just 41 percent.
  • Samford outrebounded Ole Miss, 36-34.
  • Glover led Samford with 21 points in the game.
  • Marshall had 13 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
  • Campbell also had 13 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Ole Miss was led by Ruffin with 17 points.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This was the ninth meeting between Samford and Ole Miss, and Samford's first win in the series.
  • Samford has now won eight of its last nine games.
