Short-Handed Bulldogs Open SoCon Play With Setback At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – 
Playing without several key players, including leading scorer Ques Glover, the Samford men's basketball team battled a tough Furman team before falling to the Paladins by a score of 81-49 in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Wednesday evening at Timmons Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Furman raced out to a 7-0 lead with17:42 to go in the first half following a pair of free throws by Jalen Slawson.
  • Samford scored the next five points to cut the lead to 7-5 after a three-pointer by Jaron Rillie with 16:04 left in the opening period.
  • The Paladins pushed the lead back out to six points at 13-7 and again at 15-9 with 12:22 left in the first half.
  • After Samford cut the lead to 15-12, Furman went on an 11-2 run to take a 26-14 lead with 9:00 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Conley Garrison.
  • With Furman leading, 26-17, the Paladins went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 36-17 with 5:42 left in the half after a three-pointer by Joe Anderson.
  • Furman led by as many as 27 points late in the first half, and the Paladins took a 48-21 lead at halftime.
  • The Paladins pushed their lead to 32 points at 58-26 with 16:11 left in the game after a three-pointer by Alex Hunter.
  • Furman led by as many as 33 points in the second half and came away with an 81-49 win.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Jaden Campbell led Samford with 15 points.
  • Wesley Cardet Jr. had eight points and seven rebounds.
  • Logan Dye also scored eight points for the Bulldogs.
  • Furman was led by Mike Bothwell with 18 points.
