Cardet's Career-High 27 Powers Bulldogs To 74-64 Win At Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Wesley Cardet scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Jaden Campbell and Jermaine Marshall also added a pair of double-doubles to power the Samford University men's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Alabama State on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 on the year while the Hornets slipped to 1-8. Kenny Strawbridge led ASU with 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hornets and Bulldogs were tied 6-6 at the 15:13 media timeout. Jaden Campbell, Jermaine Marshall, and Wesley Cardet all had one basket each for Samford.
  • Samford used a 14-2 run out of the timeout to take a 20-8 edge with 11:42 to play in the opening half. Cardet had nine during the stretch with Campbell adding a 3-pointer and a pair of assists.
  • Alabama State's Isaiah Range delivered back-to-back layups and a 3-pointer to quell the run for the Bulldogs while cutting the deficit to nine, 22-13, with 9:29 to play.
  • Cooper Kaifes drained a 3-pointer with 9:06 left in the half, as Samford maintained a 25-15 edge at the under-8 media timeout.
  • ASU's Gerald Liddell powered down his second dunk of the game and E.J. Clark added a pair of free throws, as the Hornets cut the Samford lead to 25-19 with 7:26 to play in the first half.
  • A deep 3-pointer from Jaron Rillie and another long jumper beyond the arc by Campbell helped the Bulldogs maintain a nine-point lead, 34-25, with 3:15 to go.
  • Cardet finished the half for the Bulldogs with a driving layup to send Samford into the locker room with a 37-29 lead.   
  • A 7-2 run by the Bulldogs fueled Samford's largest lead of the night, 44-31, with 17:24 remaining in the game.
  • Strawbridge delivered seven points in a 9-2 run for the Hornets to cut it seven, 47-40, with 14:43 to play.
  • Samford answered with a 13-0 run of its own, including five from Campbell and four by Jermaine Marshall, to build a 60-40 advantage at the 10:07 mark of the second half.
  • Juan Reyna's 3-pointer and driving layup ended Samford's run and cut the Hornets' deficit to 15, 60-45, with 8:57 on the clock.
  • The Hornets cut the margin to 10, 64-54, with another Reyna 3-pointer and layup by Clark with 5:55 to play.
  • A Cooper Kaifes layup and a Marshall jump hook gave the Bulldogs a 68-57 lead with 4:36 remaining.
  • Range connected on a pair of free throws with 2:32 to go to cut it single digits, 69-61.
  • Samford salted away the final 1:12 with a trio of free throws and a Cardet dunk to secure the 74-64 victory.                                        

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Both teams shot 35 percent from the floor in the first half while Samford outrebounded Alabama State 31-19 including 12 offensive boards.
  • Cardet led the Bulldogs with 16 first half points followed by Campbell with eight. Range led the Hornets with seven while Kenny Strawbridge and Liddell had six points apiece.
  • Samford held ASU to a mere 32.8 percent for the game.
  • The Bulldogs dominated the glass, finishing with 53 rebounds to ASU's 39.  
  • Cardet, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., turned in a career-high 27 points for the Bulldogs. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Campbell recorded his first double-double with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Marshall added his fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Strawbridge (14), Reyna (12) and Clark (10) scored in double figures for ASU.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Bulldogs played without sophomore guard Ques Glover, freshman guard A.J. Staton-McCray and junior forward Logan Dye. Glover is the Southern Conference's leading scorer at 18.8 points per game. Staton-McCray and Dye have missed the first nine games of the season due to injury.
  • Samford and Alabama State were meeting for the sixth time on the hardwood Wednesday and the first time since the 1992 season. The Hornets lead the all-time series standings 4-2 after Wednesday's loss.

UP NEXT:
  • The Bulldogs return to the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday, Dec. 11, as Samford hosts Alabama A&M University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
