BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nigeria Jones scored a career-high 28 points to lead Alabama A&M University (1-6) to a 72-47 victory over the Samford University women's basketball team on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs, who saw their four-game win streak over AAMu snapped, were led by
Andrea Cournoyer with 16 points while
Natalie Armstrong chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Alabama A&M raced out to a 10-5 lead after back-to-back 3-point buckets by Nigeria Jones with 7:03 to play in the first quarter.
- Andrea Cournoyer's 3-pointer sliced the deficit to two, 10-8, for the Bulldogs with 5:22 left in the first.
- Out of the media timeout, AAMU's Jones nailed her third 3-pointer of the period to push the margin to five, 13-8, with 4:22 remaining.
- Alabama A&M, which led by as many as nine and scored seven points off turnovers, held a 17-12 advantage at the end of the first. Samford held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 3:09 of the period.
- Both teams struggled to get untracked out of the break. AAMU used a layup by Dariauna Lewis and the third 3-pointer of the game by Jones to extend its lead to 24-14 with 6:32 remaining in the half.
- Jones gave AAMU its biggest lead of the night, 31-18, with 3:23 to go on her fourth 3-pointer.
- With 2:13 remaining in the half, Sussy Ngulefac delivered back-to-back buckets for Samford off a turnover by AAMU to cut it to nine, 31-22.
- Lewis and Zhordan Shannon closed the half with a pair of layups to send AAMU into the locker room with a 35-22 lead.
- Alabama A&M opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 20, 42-22, with 8:24 remaining in the period.
- Samford answered back with a 12-foot jumper by Cournoyer and a long 3-pointer from Natalie Armstrong, as AAMU led 46-30 with 5:42 to go in the third.
- AAMU was able to stretch the lead back to 20 at the 3:32 mark on a fast break layup by Jones.
- The Bulldogs trailed AAMU by 21 at the end of the third quarter after a buzzer-beater from Burgin.
- Both teams opened the fourth quarter on a 2:53 scoreless drought. AAMU's Jill Harris dropped in a pair of free throws for the first points of the period.
- AAMU held the Bulldogs scoreless until a 3-pointer by Cournoyer ended the stretch with 3-pointer with just 4:04 remaining in the game.
- AAMU closed out the final 3:42 outscoring the Bulldogs 7-4 to claim the xx-xx victory and end a four-game losing streak to Samford.
STATS OF THE GAME:

- Samford managed 36 percent from the floor (10-of-28) but was just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc.

- Samford finished the game shooting 34 percent while AAMU connected on 49 percent. AAMU also scored 30 points off of 20 Samford turnovers.
- Jones led all scorers with 28 points after making 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Burgin (11) and Lewis (13) joined her in double digits.
- Cournoyer's 16 points topped the Bulldogs followed by Armstrong with 11 points and six rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Samford and Alabama A&M are meeting for the sixth time on the hardwood Thursday. The Bulldogs are 4-2 all-time against AAMU after Thursday's loss. The two clubs last met on Dec. 3, 2016, as Samford came away with a 61-37 victory at the Pete Hanna Center.
