BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Playing its second home match of the week, the Samford women's tennis team earned back-to-back wins after handing South Alabama its first loss of the season with a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.

With another win under their belt, the Bulldogs improve their overall record to 4-4 on the season, while South Alabama falls to 4-1 with the loss. This is the first win that Samford has seen against the Jaguars since 2014.
 
The Bulldogs dropped one match in doubles play, but eventually earned the point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Once again, Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg and Alexis Lopez defeated their opponents at court one after claiming a 6-2 victory over Cami Moreno and Yurie Takanishi. The duo improves their record to 3-0 in doubles competition. Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest now support a winning record of 2-1 at the No. 2 spot after securing a 6-3 win against Yu Fujioka and Milka Pasanen.
 
Samford's strong play continued in singles where they nabbed wins on five of the six courts. Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg and Natalia De Ugarte faced three set battles with both players coming out victorious. Van Rensburg saw a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win against Yu Fujioka at the No. 1 spot, while Natalia De Ugarte posted a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win over Cami Moreno on the next court over. Olivia Jablonski was also headed into a three-set battle before Otoha Aoki retired leaving the score at 4-6, 6-4, 4-1 (ret).
 
Cindy Oest and Samantha Nanere both cruised to straight-set victories on their respective courts. Oest recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Yurie Takanishi on court four for her third win of the season. Nanere followed on court five with her own 7-5, 6-2 victory against Diana Monsalve.
 
Samford women's tennis will return to the court for another home match on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. against UAB.
