BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss against cross-town rival UAB on Wednesday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 4-5 on the season, while the UAB Blazers improve their record to 3-5.
 
"Today was definitely a setback, but we need to be in situations similar to what we just experienced. We had a good win last weekend, but we have to learn that showing up on a daily basis is key to us reaching our ceiling this season."
 
"Hats off to UAB today and their coaching staff. They took our cross-town rivalry to heart and they were simply willing to be tougher than us in pressure situations, both in the singles and the doubles. They fully deserve the win today." 
 
The Blazers won the doubles point early on with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Doubles duo, Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest, where the only Bulldogs to defeat their opponents in doubles competition with a 6-3 victory over UAB's Sydney Clarke and Alexandra Ferreira Da Silva. The pair now have an overall record of 3-1 on the season in doubles.
 
Alexis Lopez and Samantha Nanere picked up victories over their opponents on singles courts three and five, respectively. Lopez battled Megan Bertrands for three sets, eventually taking a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory to improve her record to 4-3 at the No. 3 spot. Nanere followed at the No. 5 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set victory over Alexandra Ferreira Da Silva.
 
The Samford women's tennis will return to the court one more time this week with a match against Murry State on Saturday, Feb. 27 starting at 12 p.m. at the Samford Tennis Center.
