Men’s Track Goes Back-To-Back, Women Claim Sixth-Straight SoCon Title

LEXINGTON, Va. – Samford Men's and Women's Track and Field squads claimed back-to-back Southern Conference Titles at the 2021 Southern Conference Indoor Championships, Sunday.
The Bulldogs had an impressive first day to the Championships held at the Corps Physical Training Facility on the campus of the Virginia Military Institute, Saturday. The Bulldogs had three individual SoCon champions, as well as a trio of second-place and third-place finishes.
Matt Cahoon won his second-straight shot put SoCon title, with a toss of 15.85 meters. Megan Elliott also won a title for the Bulldogs in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters, while Makenzie Hooten brought home the bronze (1.60 meters). Hannah Daffin continued her strong sophomore campaign claiming the top prize in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.10 meters. Both men's and women's squads took home the silver medal in the distance medley relay, while Ty Kimberlin and Justin Stuckey took home the silver and bronze in the men's long jump, with marks of 7.23 meters and 7.15 meters respectively. Freshman, Mia Milasinovic, finished third in the women's pentathlon with 3,248 points.
The men's squad was in second-place in the team standings following the first day of the competition, in need of great performances on Sunday to secure the program's second-straight Men's Indoor SoCon Title. The women wrapped up day one in first-place in the team standings, looking for their sixth-straight SoCon Indoor Championship.
On day two, the Bulldogs claimed 11 SoCon individual titles, in addition to four second-place and four third-place finishes, enroute to a sweep of the men's and women's team titles. Ty Kimberlin kicked off the day securing 10 points for the Bulldogs, claiming the men's heptathlon title with a meet record 5,203 points, while freshman Landon Wright took third-place (4,859). Daffin added a bronze medal in the women's weight throw (16.41 meters) to her strong Championships performance and sophomore Katie Strozier also claimed a bronze for Samford, as she finished with a new personal best in the women's 800-meter run (2:11.56).
The Bulldogs swept the podium in the men's 60-meter dash as Titus Moore claimed the SoCon individual title with a mark of 7.93, while Michael McMahan (8.09) and Jack McHugh (8.10) finished second and third respectively. Evan Brooks added a pair of SoCon titles to his growing sophomore resume, winning the men's 60-meter dash and the men's 200-meter dash.
Samford went one, two in the women's pole vault as Brittany Bishop repeated as SoCon Champion with a jump of 3.80 meters, while Tally Wilson claimed the silver medal (3.65 meters). The Bulldogs also claimed the top two spots in the men's high jump as Justin Stuckey won the individual title, tying the program record and setting a new facility record with a jump of 2.17 meters, while Matt Cahoon finished second with a jump of 2.05 meters.
The Bulldogs closed the meet with five SoCon titles, as Morayo Bhadmos won the women's triple jump with a facility record leap of 12.57 meters. Michael McMahan took top prize in the men's 400-meter dash (48.68), and Matt Cahoon finished first in the men's weight throw with a throw of 17.30 meter. Jose Penalver added to his season accomplishments with a first place finish in the men's 800-meter run (1:49.77) setting a new meet record. The women's 4x400-meter relay, comprised of Hannah Lueders, Kaitlyn Cole, Katie Strozier, and Amanda Dumar claimed the final SoCon title for the Bulldogs, which secured the women's team's sixth-straight Southern Conference title.
