Bulldogs Notch Third Straight Win Against Alabama State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The Samford men's tennis team recorded its third consecutive win, earning a 7-0 decision over Alabama State at the Samford Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Bulldogs improve their overall record to 3-4, while the Alabama State Hornets move to a record of 2-2 with the loss.
 
"We competed well today. We did a really good job of getting off to a quick start in the doubles and carrying that momentum into the first sets of the singles courts," said head coach Rahim Esmail. "We are looking forward to a good week of practice and competing again next weekend."
 
Samford took an early lead, earning the doubles point after wins on all three courts. Victor Chaw and partner Jim Hendrix defeated their opponents, Alejo Calvis and Luka Markovic, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot. Eladio Fabregas and Tomas Santantonio followed suit with a 4-3 win at the No. 2 spot against Alabama State's Chris Andre and Juan Rodriguez. Rossouw Norval and Mohammed Ali Bellalouna also secured their doubles win at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2 victory over Ruan Du Preez and Assil Boussayri.
 
Singles action proved just as successful with all six Bulldogs earning wins on their respective courts. Rossouw Norval emerged victorious at the No. 1 spot after a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 battle against Chris Andre. Victor Chaw defeated Ruan Du Preez in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, at court two, while Eladio Fabregas won at court three, 6-3, 6-2, against Assil Boussayri. Jim Hendrix grabbed a 6-3, 7-5 win against Juan Rodriguez at the No. 4 spot and Tomas Santantonio locked in a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Luka Markovic at court five. At the No. 6 spot, Mohammed Ali Bellalouna defeated Kristofer Johnson, 6-4, 6-0 to round out singles play.
 
Samford will return to the court next Saturday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. to compete against Lipscomb University on their home courts in Nashville, Tenn.
