Men’s Basketball Drops Double-OT Thriller At Mercer, 89-82

MACON, Ga. –
The Samford men's basketball team dropped a double-overtime thriller at Mercer, 89-82, Monday evening at Hawkins Arena.
 
The game was Samford's first action since Jan. 20, after having five-straight contests postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. With the loss, Samford falls to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improves to 11-7 overall and 4-6 in league games.

  • Jaron Rillie led Samford with a career-high 18 points in the loss.
  • Preston Parks followed with 17 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Jalen Dupree registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Logan Dye added 12 points for Samford.
  • Ross Cummings led Mercer with 25 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercer jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with 17:08 to go in the first half after a layup by Leon Ayers.
  • With Samford trailing, 10-4, the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-10 lead with 11:00 left in the first half following a pair of free throws by Rillie.
  • Mercer then went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-13 lead with 8:34 remaining in the first half following a jumper by Jeff Gary.
  • The Bears built their lead to eight points at 26-18, and Mercer held a 28-20 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • Mercer pushed its lead to 12 points at 34-22 with 18:02 left in the second half after a three-pointer by Cummings.
  • Samford fought back to cut the lead to six points at 36-30 with 14:05 to go in the second half following a layup by Parks.
  • With Samford trailing, 38-30, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to knot the score at 38-38 with 12:14 left in the second period after a three-pointer by Rillie.
  • Mercer came back to take a 48-42 lead at the 7:53 mark of the second half after a three-pointer by Cummings.
  • Samford then cut the lead to two points at 50-48 with 5:46 left in the second period after a three-point play by A.J. Staton-McCray.
  • The Bulldogs cut the lead to 59-57 with 14 seconds left on a free throw by Staton-McCray.
  • Samford's Jacob Tryon hit a jumper at the buzzer to knot the score at 59-59 and send the game to overtime.
  • Mercer took an early 65-61 lead with 3:29 left in the first overtime after a three-pointer by Cummings.
  • Samford scored the next five points to take a 66-65 lead with 2:48 left after a three-point play by Dupree.
  • Samford took a 72-69 lead with four seconds left on a layup by Parks.
  • Mercer's Gary, however, was fouled on a three-point attempt. Gary made all three free throws to make the score 72-72 and send the contest to a second overtime.
  • In the second overtime, Samford went up, 80-77 with 1:52 to go after a jumper by Rillie.
  • Mercer, however, went on a 10-0 run to take an 87-80 lead with five seconds left following a pair of free throws by Neftali Alvarez.
  • The Bears held on for the 89-82 win.
