BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team split two games to open the Blazer Classic, defeating Ball State, 1-0, before the host of the tournament, UAB, locked in early runs to defeat the Bulldogs 2-0 Saturday evening at Mary Bowers Field.
THE BASICS
GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
- The Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the second inning after Mekhi Mayfield singled to center field to drive in Merritt Cahoon for the first run of the game.
- Ansley Yantis at shortstop connected with Ally Bigham at first base to execute a crucial double play to push the game into the bottom of the fifth. Samford still held a slight 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.
- For the remainder of the game, Samford would register three additional hits, but would eventually close out game one with a one-run victory over Ball State.
GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
- Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, but the Blazers added two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Analyse Petree opened up with a double for UAB, which was followed by another double by Taylor Watford to drive in Petree. Watford would then advance to third off a Samford error and score during the next play after Faith Hegh singled to shortstop.
- The Bulldogs continued to battle and held the Blazers scoreless for the remainder of the game, however, Samford could not find an offensive spark leading to a 2-0 defeat in game two.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Abby Swaney pitched her fourth full game of the season in game one to earn her fourth win in the circle for the Bulldogs. In the 7.0 innings, Swaney allowed zero runs on six hits and retired two batters at the plate for Samford's second shutout of the season.
- Emily Barnett moves to 4-3 on the season after earning the loss for the Bulldogs in game two. She pitched the complete 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out two batters.
NOTABLES:
- Mekhi Mayfield drove in Samford's only run of the day in game one after she earned an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Mayfield has been a key offensive player for the Bulldogs with seven runs on 13 hits, one double, two home runs, and 8 RBIS on the season.
- Defensively, Ansley Yantis lead Samford with 12 assists at short stop, while O'Neil Roberson had a team-high 14 putouts for a total of 100 this season.

- The Samford softball team will continue with its time at the Blazer Classic with a Saturday doubleheader. The Bulldogs will compete against Southern Illinois in game one starting at 10 a.m., while game two against Ball State will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Mary Bowers Field.
