Track And Field Has Strong Showing At Yellow Jacket Invite

ATLANTA, Ga. – Samford track and field opened the 2021 outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech.

The Bulldogs had an impressive day one with six first-place finishes. Maggie Johnston took home the first-place points for Samford in the women's shot put with a throw of 13.76 meters. Johnston returns for her final year of outdoor eligibility following the postponement of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Matt Cahoon continued his outstanding senior season, grabbing the first-place points in the men's javelin throw with a toss of 58.24 meters. Ty Kimberlin added to the Bulldogs dominance in the field events with a first-place finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.12 meters.

It was also a family affair for the Bulldogs on day one, with a pair of siblings earning podium finishes. Emorie Long and Erin Long had second and third-place finishes in the women's javelin throw with tosses of 40.11 meters and 39.81 meters respectively. Samford also swept the top places in the men's and women's 2000-meter steeplechase with Emma Garner taking the top spot in the women's steeple with a time of 6:45.99, while Ben Garner won the men's 2000-meter steeplechase crossing the line in 5:53.22.

Samford earned its first event sweep of the outdoor season in the men's 110-meter hurdles as Titus Moore (14.17), Michael McMahan (14.19), and Emmanuel Tait (14.40) finished first, second, and third respectively.

On day two Samford had five first-place finishes, as well as a pair of silver and bronze finishes to wrap up the first outdoor meet of the season. Tally Wilson opened the day winning the women's pole vault with a jump of 3.70 meters, while Maggie Johnston added to her meet total with a win in the women's discus (51.39 meters).

Amanda Dumar won the women's 400-meter hurdles crossing the line in 1:02.48, while Michael McMahan added to his weekend's point total with a first place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles (52.58). Justin Stuckey rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs winning the men's high jump with a leap of 2.15 meters.

McCray Kelton: Second-place finish in the men's pole vault (4.40 meters).
Ty Kimberlin: First-place finish in the men's long jump (7.12 meters).
Marshall Gainer: Third-place finish in the men's discus throw (39.97 meters).
Justin Stuckey: First-place finish in the men's high jump (2.15 meters).

Women's Track
Hannah Lueders: Third-place finish in the women's 100-meter dash (12.076).
Emma Garner: First-place finish in the women's 2000-meter steeplechase (6:45.99).
Amanda Dumar: First-place finish in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:02.48).

Men's Track
Titus Moore: First-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.17).
Michael McMahan: Second-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.19).

The Bulldogs will have a weekend off before returning to competition at UAB on April 3-4.
