HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With only one out on the board in the top of the first, Mercer's Danielle Castleberry doubled to center field to drive in Micayla Rood for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Merritt Cahoon was quick to respond for the Bulldogs with a double to right center to bring home Amanda Briskin to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. This would be followed up by three-straight strikes in the top of the second from Emily Barnett to put Samford back at the plate.
  • Bases would be loaded in the bottom of the second as Whitney Hinton stepped up to the plate for the Bulldogs. On a 1-0 count, Hinton hammered her fourth home run of the weekend series over the left center fence for Samford's second grand slam of the season.
  • The Bears would add on two runs in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth to close the gap, but the game wouldn't be within one run for long as Merritt Cahoon singled through the left side of the diamond to score Whitney Hinton. This run solidified a 6-4 victory over Mercer, allowing for the Bulldogs to open Southern Conference play with a 2-1 series win.
