Hinton And Barnett Earn SoCon Softball Weekly Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior second baseman Whitney Hinton and junior pitcher Emily Barnett were both honored by the Southern Conference for their performances versus Mercer over the weekend when the league released its weekly softball awards Monday afternoon.
Hinton was named the SoCon Player of the Week, while Barnett was tabbed as the league's Pitcher of the Week. This marks the second time this season that Barnett has been named Pitcher of the Week, as she earned the honor on March 1. She was also named the league's Pitcher of the Month for February. This marks the first time Samford has swept the two softball weekly awards since 2017.
Hinton hit .571 (4-of-7) with four home runs and seven RBI as Samford won two-of-three games against Mercer over the weekend. She hit at least one home run in each game of the series. She homered twice in game one and once each in the final two games of the series. She drove in two runs in first game, one in the second game, and four on a grand slam in the second inning of the third game. She accumulated a 2.286 slugging percentage for the week.
Barnett earned the wins in both of Samford's victories over Mercer over the weekend. She pitched the complete 6.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits and recording six strikeouts in the game one win. In game three, she tossed 6.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. For the week, she posted a 1.17 ERA in 12.0 innings of work.
Samford will play a three-game series at Western Carolina this weekend. The teams are set for a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. (CT), and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) from Cullowhee, N.C.
