BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Friday evening at the Samford Softball Field, the Bulldogs split a doubleheader against conference opponent Furman, winning game one, 11-6, before dropping game two against the Paladins, 5-3, in the nightcap.
THE BASICS
GAME 1
Final: Samford 11 | Furman 6

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM1
- After a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Fleming to advance Natalie Morgan to third, Chloe Fabio would be next at the plate for Furman, grounding out to second base to score Morgan for the early lead in the top of the second inning.
- Samford responded in the bottom half of the inning with Ansley Yantis smacking a home run over the left field fence to drive in Amanda Briskin for a 2-1 lead over the Paladins. Mekhi Mayfield followed suit with a home run of her own to right field to extend the Bulldogs lead to 3-1.
- Furman put the game back within one run after Riley Ludlam singled to third base to score Claire Ginder in the top of the third. However, Samford was unphased and recorded four runs in the bottom of the same inning. With no outs on the board, Merritt Cahoon doubled to left field to bring home Ryan Brzozoski and Whitney Hinton, while Grace Robertson singled up the middle one at bat later to drive in Amanda Briskin and Cahoon for a 7-2 advantage.
- It would be a three up, three down situation for Emily Barnett and the Bulldogs in the top of the fourth to put Samford back at the plate. Timberlyn Shurbutt would lead off with a double to right center which would be followed up with a single to right center from Whitney Hinton to score Shurbutt to further Samford's lead.
- The Paladins would knock two home runs to put the score at 8-5 in the top of fifth. Mackense Greico homered to right field to score Emily Bartlett, while Natalie Morgan hit a dinger over left center for Furman's fifth run of the game.
- In the bottom half of that same inning, Timber Shurbutt launched a ball over the left field fence for the Bulldogs third home run of the game and to bring home fellow teammates Ansley Yantis and pinch runner Abbey Dorsett to put the score at 11-5.
- Furman countered with its third home run of the game as well after Kaitlyn Laudick homered to right center, however, it would be the final run of the night for the Paladins to give Samford an 11-6 win in game one.
GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM2
- The Bulldogs would get on the board first after Amanda Briskin singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Whitney Hinton for the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. This would be followed up with two strikeouts from Taylor DeCelles and a pop up to third base to close out the top of second to keep the Paladins scoreless.
- Furman eventually tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth after Riley Ludlam hit a home run to left field with two outs on the board. Kaitlyn Laudick stepped up next for the Paladins and would strikeout swinging to put the Bulldogs back at the plate.
- Samford registered two doubles in the bottom of the fourth with the second coming from Ansley Yantis to drive in Grace Robertson for a slight one-run advantage over Furman.
- Samford then made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the fifth with Amanda Briskin knocking a ball up the middle of the diamond into center field for Whitney Hinton to make it back home from second base.
- In the top of the sixth, Furman managed to tie the game at 3-3 with two outs on the board after Riley Ludlam doubled to left center to score Fleming and Morgan. The Paladins then added on two more runs in the top of the seventh after Claire Ginder doubled to right center to split the series with a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
IN THE CIRCLE:
- Emily Barnett pitched a complete game one for Samford, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and recording four strikeouts in 29 at bats. Barnett received her seventh win in the circle for an overall record of 7-6 this season.
- Taylor DeCelles showed impressive efforts for the Bulldogs in game two with the senior pitching 7.0 innings. Even though she earned the loss, DeCelles had a season-high 11 strikeouts after facing 28 at bats while allowing five runs on seven hits.
NOTABLES:
- Ansley Yantis was a key player offensively for Samford with a total of two runs on two hits and three RBIs. The freshman also hit her first career home run as a Bulldog in game one of the doubleheader.
- Mekhi Mayfield and Timberlyn Shurbutt each had a home run of their own in game one with Mayfield hitting her fourth of the season and Shurbutt with her sixth. Shurbutt closed out the night two runs on two hits and three RBIs.
- Amanda Briskin would have two runs on one hit in game one, but would make an even greater impact in game two as the sophomore had three hits in four at bats and drove in two of the three runs for Samford.
