Bulldogs Look To Qualify For NCAA Prelims On Last Chance Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford's Men's & Women's Track and Field teams will compete at two separate last chance meets at Lee University and North Carolina A&T State University as they look to qualify for the 2021 Outdoor NCAA East Preliminary Meet to be held in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Bulldogs are coming off of a program first four-peat, as both men's and women's squads swept the Southern Conference Titles in both the 2021 Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Enroute to their sweep, the Bulldogs broke two SoCon Championships records, three program records, and won a total of 14 individual SoCon titles.
Samford will be taking 19 student-athletes to compate at the Lee University Last Chance Meet on May 15, and five student-athletes to compete at the North Carolina A&T Last Chance Meet the following day. The top 48 student-athletes from each event will advance to one of two preliminary meets to be held in Jacksonville, Florida and College Station, Texas.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
- Titus Moore will be competing in both last chance meets in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Moor set a SoCon Outdoor Championships record in the event preliminaries with a time of 13.97 advancing in first position out of his heat, and then took home the silver in the finals with a time of 14.00w (3.7).
- Emmanuel Tait is set to compete at both meets in the men's 100-meter dash. Tait claimed the SoCon individual title in the event (10.58) just two weeks ago.
- Jose Penalver will take to the track in the 800-meter run for the Bulldogs at Lee University following his bronze medal performance at the SoCon Championships crossing the line in 1:52.15. During the indoor season Penalver set a program record in the men's 800m run with a time of 1:49.14.
- Harrison Siegel will join Penalver in the 800 middle distance event. Siegel did not compete in the SoCon Championships, but is coming off a personal best performance at the War Eagle Invite at Auburn University where he posted a time of 1:55.02.
- Evan Brooks will be competing at Lee University and NC A&T this weekend in a pair of sprinting events. Brooks will take on the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at both meets, and is coming off a pair of bronze medal performances at the 2021 SoCon Championships with a personal best 21.46 in the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash (10.70).
- Michael McMahan will get a double dose of meets this weekend as Samford's lone competitor in the men's 400-meter dash, before making the trip to Greensboro, North Carolina to run the 100-meter hurdles alongside Titus Moore at NC A&T.
- Benjamin Garner leads the men's distance squad in the 3000-meter steeplechase for which he took home the bronze at the SoCon Championships with a program-record time 8:57.78.
- Emma Garner headlines the women's squad in the 3000-meter steeple chase following her wire-to-wire victory at the SoCon Championships with a time of 10:54.35. Garner also took home the silver in the women's 5000-meter run crossing the line in a time of 10:54.35.
- Jackson Merrell is set to challenge in the men's 5000-meter run after coming off the difficult double at the SoCOn Championships where he had a new personal best in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:39.86 as well as the 5000-meter run (15:30.18).
- Justin Stuckey looks to add an outdoor NCAA regional to his growing resume and will compete in both last chance meets this weekend in the men's high jump. Stuckey has had an outstanding outdoor campaign that saw him break a program record in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.21 meters (7' 3"), as well as set a new SoCon Championships Meet record with a jump of 2.19 meters (7' 2.25").
- On the women's side, Charlotte Krause will compete in the women's high jump coming off of a SoCon title in the event with a jump of 1.74 meters (5' 8.5") as she looks to make the top 48 student-athletes who are selected for the NCAA preliminary round.
- Samford will have a quartet of Bulldogs competing in the women's pole vault at the Lee University Last Chance Meet. Tally Wilson, Jackie Barnes, Brittany Bishop, and Riley Alexander will all compete in the event, which Wilson won at the SoCon Championships with personal best jump of 2.97 meters (13' 0.25"). Alexander will also compete in the 100-meter hurdles at Lee University.
- Kaitlyn Cole will round out the women's sprints in the 400-meter dash, an event she placed fourth in at the SoCon Championships after running a personal best time of 56.15.
- Mary Grace Strozier will lead a trio of Bulldogs in the distance double 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs coming off of a third and fifth place finish in the events respectively. Strozier, Allison Nelson, and Harper McGowan will take the track at Lee University.
