LEXINGTON, Va. - The Samford men's basketball team dropped a 99-80 Southern Conference game at VMI Thursday evening at Cameron Hall.
Samford, who was playing a second-straight game without the SoCon's leading rebounder
Jermaine Marshall, falls to 11-7 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference play. VMI improves to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in league games.
Samford was led in the loss by
Logan Dye with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Ques Glover had 18 points, five rebounds and three assists for Samford.
Jaron Rillie scored 14 points, while
Quinn Richey added 12 points.
For VMI, Kamdyn Curman led the way with 23 points. Honor Huff had 21 points for the Keydets, while Trey Bonham added 16 points.
Samford jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with 17:13 to go in the first half following a layup by Dye. VMI came back to take a 17-12 lead with 14:55 left in the first half after a three-pointer by Curfman. The Bulldogs fought back to take a 22-20 lead with 10:06 to go in the first half after another layup by Dye.
VMI came back to take an eight-point lead at 37-29 with 4:59 left in the first half after a three-pointer by Tanner Mans. After Samford cut the lead to six points at 37-31, VMI scored the next four points to take a 41-31 lead at the 4:02 to go in the half after a pair of free throws by Jake Stephens. The Keydets led by 13 points at 49-36 with 2:22 to go in the first half after a layup by Huff. VMI held a 51-41 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Early in the second half, VMI pushed its lead out to 15 points at 56-41 with 18:28 to go after a layup by Sean Conway. Samford cut the lead to nine points at 64-55 with 14:58 remaining after a three-pointer by Rillie. VMI extended the lead out to 19 points at 76-57 with 9:41 left after a three-pointer by Stephens. Samford closed to within 13 points at 79-66 with 7:37 to go on a jumper by Glover.
VMI then went on a 13-3 run to take a 23-point lead at 92-69 with 4:14 to go after a three-pointer by Huff. The Keydets led by as many as 25 points down the stretch and VMI came away with the 99-80 victory.
Samford will play at UNCG Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT) in the Greensboro Coliseum.
