Bulldogs Win Share Of Ninth-Straight SoCon Title With 2-1 Victory At Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford soccer team earned a 2-1 win at Wofford Sunday afternoon at Snyder Stadium to earn a share of the program's ninth-straight Southern Conference regular-season title. The streak is the longest in the history of the SoCon.

The Bulldogs had to win their last three games to earn a share of the championship. Samford head coach Todd Yelton talked about his team's reaction to the accomplishment.

"They were excited, but at first it was a little bit of shock for everyone," Yelton said. "After only getting one point in our first weekend, and then dropping points in the ETSU game at home, it was a long shot. But you have two options in those moments - you can either feel sorry for yourself and go the route of 'woe is me,' or you can pull yourself up by your bootstraps and keep fighting, and that's what the girls did."

Samford ends the regular season with a record of 9-3-6 overall and 5-1-3 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs share the SoCon regular season title with Chattanooga. Chattanooga tied Furman, 1-1 on Sunday, which opened the door for Samford to claim a share of the title.

"I knew at halftime what the score was (of Chattanooga at Furman), but I didn't talk to the kids about it," Yelton said. "Our mindset today was control what we can control, and we knew with a win that we would be the two-seed and host, and that was important to us. And if we got more out of it, that would be awesome."

Chattanooga will be the No. 1 seed for next week's SoCon Tournament, while Samford will be the No. 2 seed, with both teams hosting quarterfinal matches on Friday and a semifinal game on Sunday. Wofford wraps up the regular season at 8-7-3 overall and 3-4-2 in league action.

Samford got off to a hot start with Ella Simpson scoring on a header off an assist from a corner kick by Whitaker Buchanan in the first minute of the contest for a 1-0 Samford lead. Wofford tied the game in the eighth minute when Ansley Elizalde scored on a penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1. The Bulldogs retook the lead in the 10th minute when Buchanan scored on another penalty kick to give Samford a 2-1 advantage.

"The danger in scoring so early is you think it's going to be an easy afternoon," Yelton said. "You can argue that today was the biggest conference match in the last 10 years for Wofford. Today wasn't easy. Wofford played their socks off. The last 10 minutes were challenging, but I thought Emma Donley played an outstanding game for us, and we were able to hold on."

As a team, Samford finished with seven shots, to eight for Wofford. The Bulldogs had five corner kicks, to two for the Terriers. Samford goalkeeper Emma Donley saved four shots in earning the win, while Wofford goalkeeper Caroline Doss also had four saves in the contest.

Samford will host the winner of the Citadel-VMI game in a quarterfinal game next Friday, Oct. 28. Samford will also host a quarterfinal contest between Mercer and ETSU that same day. The semifinal game between the winners of Friday's contests will be played Sunday, Oct. 30, at Shauna Yelton Field.
