SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (19-25, 15-25, 25-16, 16-25) decision at Wofford in the team's regular-season finale Friday evening at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
With the loss, Samford falls to 16-12 overall and 11-5 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improves to 16-11 overall and 8-7 in SoCon action. Wofford will take on Mercer Saturday night, while Samford will turn its attention to next week's Southern Conference Tournament.
In the loss, Samford was led by
Kenya McQuirter and
Gracie Lynn Butler with 11 kills each.
Greer Golden had 10 kills for the Bulldogs.
Kate Morgan had a team-high 13 digs for Samford.
Samantha Horn and
Kayla Keshock had 19 assists each. For Wofford, Sarah MacLean and Bella Zeman has 11 kills apiece.
In the first set, Samford jumped out to an early 4-1 lead off a Wofford attack error. Wofford scored the next seven points to take an 8-4 lead off a Samford attack error. With Wofford leading, 11-6, Samford scored the next four points to cut the lead to 11-10 on a kill by Butler. With Wofford leading, 16-15, the Terriers scored the next three points to push their lead to 19-15. Wofford then scored six of the next 10 points to take the first set, 25-19.
Wofford raced out to a 10-5 lead in the second set on a Samford attack error. Samford cut the lead to two points at 10-8, but Wofford pushed the lead back out to five points at 14-9. The Terriers built their lead to 21-12 and eventually took the second set by a score of 25-15.
In the third set, Samford took an early 5-2 lead, but Wofford fought back to knot the score at 6-6. The Bulldogs took an 11-8 lead on a kill by Butler. With the score tied at 13-13, Samford went on a 12-3 run to take the third set, 25-16.
Wofford grabbed an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set. The Terriers built a 20-13 lead on their way to a 25-16 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
The pairings for next week's Southern Conference Tournament will be released by the league Saturday evening.
