BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team led from start to finish in earning a 90-38 victory over Belhaven Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 3-0 on the season. The game counted as an exhibition for Belhaven.
"I thought we played really well," Samford head coach
Bucky McMillan said. "I never really look at the score or necessarily who we're playing, it's just about how we're doing. Are we doing things we're supposed to be doing, are we getting better? I thought we had a massive jump from game two to three. We got a lot better, and we were way better on defense."
Samford was led in the game by
Jermaine Marshall with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Achor Achor, making his Samford debut, tallied 11 points and four rebounds.
Logan Dye finished with 14 points and four rebounds, while
Britton Johnson had 10 points for the Bulldogs. A total of 19 Samford players saw the floor in the win.
Belhaven was led by Jordan Marshall with 15 points. Damien Wheaton finished with seven points and five boards for the Blazers.
Samford jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 13:10 to go in the first half following a three-pointer by Marshall. The Bulldogs pushed the lead out to 22-6 at the 9:43 mark of the first half after a jumper by
Nathan Johnson.
The Bulldogs maintained the significant lead for the rest of the half. Samford ended the half on an 8-2 run to take a 45-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Samford pushed its lead out to 36 points at 59-23 with 16:36 to go after a jumper by Marshall. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 46 points at 71-25 with 11:55 remaining on a jumper by
Ques Glover.
Samford led by as many as 54 points down the stretch in the second half. The Bulldogs closed out the game with a 90-38 victory.
Samford will play its first road game of the season on Thursday, Nov. 17, at Alabama A&M. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start from Huntsville, Ala.
