HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball team improved to 4-0 with an 84-64 win at Alabama A&M on Thursday.
Thursday's victory marks the Bulldogs' first 4-0 start to a season since 2018-19 and improves their series record over Alabama A&M to 6-1.
Achor Achor led a group of four Bulldogs that scored in double figures with a season-high 18 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore forward shot 80 percent (4-5) from the floor and went 10-14 from the free-throw line.
Ques Glover posted 16 points and six rebounds while
Bubba Parham and
A.J. Staton-McCray both logged 13 points and seven boards.
Jermaine Marshall added eight points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs knocked down five of their first eight shots to begin the night, with a three by
Jaden Campbell giving them an 11-3 lead at the 15:34 mark. Samford extended its lead to double digits after an Achor free throw made it 18-8 with 10:15 to play in the first.
Alabama A&M shrank Samford's lead to 26-18 at the 5:25 mark in the first, but the Bulldogs responded by successfully knocking down their next four shots as part of an 11-3 run before eventually taking a 40-29 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs outscored Alabama A&M 11-6 over the first four and a half minutes of the second half and would go on to climb out to a 63-47 lead following a three-ball from Marshall at the 9:55 mark.
A pair of free throws from Glover with 8:25 to go put the Bulldogs up 67-47. They would again extend their lead to 20 points at the 5:19 mark after a pair of successful shots from the charity stripe from Parham put Samford on top 78-58 before eventually giving way to the 84-64 final score.
The Bulldogs knocked down a season-high 27 free throws on 37 attempts (73 percent) while finishing the night shooting 41 percent (25-60) on all field goals and 28 percent (7-25) from three.
Samford made its presence felt in the low post, out-rebounding Alabama A&M 56-35 in the contest. The Bulldogs additionally tallied 34 points in the paint while pulling down 18 offensive rebounds for 17 second-chance points.
The Bulldogs will return home on Sunday, Nov. 20 to take on defending SWAC champs Texas Southern at 2:00 p.m.
