BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Bulldogs notched a 3-0 victory over Southern Conference-foe The Citadel on Saturday in their final home match of the 2022 season.
With the win, Samford improves to 15-11 overall and 10-4 in SoCon play. The Citadel drops to 11-16 overall and 4-10 in conference action. The Bulldogs finish their home schedule with a record of 8-2 in games played at the Pete Hanna Center, with a mark of 7-1 against SoCon opponents.
Kenya McQuirter and
Kate Wonus both paced the Bulldogs with nine kills each, with Wonus hitting .444 and posting a team-high three blocks.
Lauren Deaton and
Gracie Lynn Butler both smashed eight kills, with Deaton logging 10 digs and Butler recording nine.
Samantha Horn led the Bulldogs with 15 assists, to go along with six digs.
Kayla Keshock registered 13 assists while also posting four service aces, bringing her season total to a team-high 45.
Kate Morgan added a team-high 14 digs.
In set one, the Bulldogs took advantage of a 6-1 run to create distance between them and The Citadel to go up 16-11. Samford continued to apply the pressure, outscoring The Citadel 9-4 over the remainder of the set to claim it, 25-15.
The Bulldogs rattled off a 4-0 run in set two to go up 17-12, followed by a 7-0 tun to get to set point at 24-13. A block solo by Butler put the finishing touches on set two to give Samford a 25-14 win.
Samford took control of the third and final set with a 6-0 run to go up 7-1, followed by a 5-0 run to take a 12-2 lead. The Bulldogs got to match point via 3-0 run that put them on top 24-11 before giving way to the 25-15 final score.
The Bulldogs will player their final two games of the 2022 regular season next week, beginning with a Wednesday, Nov. 9 match at Mercer. First serve from, Macon, Ga. is set for 6:00 p.m. (CST).
