Men’s Hoops Hosts Anderson University on Monday in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Bulldogs welcome in the Trojans of Anderson University on Monday, Nov. 7 to the Pete Hanna Center for their season opener.

Monday's contest will tip off at 7:00 p.m. (CST) and be streamed live on ESPN+.

Samford's 2022-23 opener marks the first of three home games in the Pete Hanna Center in a six-day span. The Bulldogs will host Spring Hill College on Nov. 10 and Belhaven University on Nov. 12. The Bulldogs will play a total of seven home contests in November, highlighted by a four-game home stand from Nov. 20-27

Year two under Head Coach Bucky McMillan in 2021-22 served as one of the Bulldogs' most successful seasons in recent history. For the first time since the 1998-99 campaign, Samford men's hoops tallied 20 regular season wins. McMillan's squad added 15 wins from the previous season, finishing 21-11 and earning McMillan 2021-22 SoCon Media Coach of the Year honors.

The Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the 2022 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, finishing just four points behind preseason favorite Furman and garnering four first-place votes. Samford was picked third in the media poll.

Four Bulldogs were named to the 2022 Preseason All-SoCon Squad, the most of any team in the conference. Ques Glover, Jermaine Marshall, Logan Dye, and newcomer Bubba Parham all received the nod to the All-Preseason team

Samford returns the bulk of its roster from 2021-22, including leading scorer and All-SoCon First Team selection Ques Glover. Glover ranked third in the SoCon in scoring average last season at 19.2 points per game while also ranking second in the conference in assists per game at 4.4 The Knoxville, Tenn. native was named a finalist for the Lou Henson Award in March of 2022, an accolade that honors the best mid-major division I men's basketball player.

Junior guard Jaden Campbell looks to build on a 2021-22 season that saw him average 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest. The Brampton, Ontario, native led the Bulldogs with 59 threes on 152 attempts (.388) and provided a spark on the floor with his elite athleticism.

Returning post players Jermaine Marshall and Logan Dye highlight the Bulldogs' front court. Marshall logged a team-high 11 double-doubles last season while leading the Bulldogs and ranking third in the SoCon in rebounding average (8.2 RPG). Marshall also ranked second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game. Dye ranked third on the squad last season in scoring average (12.7 PPG) and second in rebounding average (5.3 RPG).

The Bulldogs landed a heavy sough-after transfer target in senior guard Bubba Parham this offseason, who spent his last three seasons at Georgia Tech. Parham spent his first two collegiate seasons at VMI, where he earned a spot on the All-SoCon Freshman team in 2017-18 and All-SoCon Second Team in 2018-19. A lethal three-point shooter with deep range, Parham led the SoCon in scoring in 2018-19 at 21.4 points per game.

Transfers will play a huge role in adding depth to the Bulldogs' roster this season. Samford made key additions to the forward position with Achor Achor, a 6-9 forward from Chipola College, and Nathan Johnson, an athletic 6-7 big from UMBC. Eastern Florida State College transfer Brody Boyer and Alabama Crimson Tide alumnus Britton Johnson will look to provide valuable minutes at the guard position.

A potential x-factor for the Bulldogs this season is A.J. Staton-McCray, who was limited to just three games in 2021-22 due to injury. As a freshman during McMillan's first season in 2020-21, the Delray Beach, Fla. native averaged 10 points and 4.5 rebounds en route to being named to the All-SoCon Freshman squad.

Samford was receiving votes in the initial College Insider Men's Mid-Major Top 25 announced on Oct. 31. Five other SoCon schools appeared in the poll, with Furman checking in at number six and UNCG, Chattanooga, Wofford, and Mercer all were all receiving votes.

The Trojans welcome in first-year Head Coach Jimmie Williams to lead the program in 2022-23. Williams is no stranger to the SoCon, having spent his previous four seasons as an assistant Coach at Furman. He helped guide the Paladins to 88 wins during his time there.

Anderson University posted a record of 11-17 in 2021-22, with a mark of 8-16 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Trojans opened up their season last year by knocking off the No. 2 ranked team in division II in Flagler College, 80-77.

Myles Jenkins, who was named to the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team in 2021-22, headlines as the Trojans top returner. Jenkins reached double-figure scoring nine times, averaging 7.8 points per game and 4.1 rebounds.

The Trojans welcome in eight new players to the 2022-23 squad, including a pair of SoCon transfers in Jackson Gammons (The Citadel) and Jacksen Greco (Mercer). Anderson will be tasked with replacing forward Crosby James II and guard Parker Dortch, who both earned All-SAC recognition last season.
