Samford Women’s Basketball Falls To Troy On Opening Night

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In front of an electric atmosphere at the Pete Hanna Center, the Samford women's basketball fell 66-62 on opening night to the Troy Trojans.

With the loss, Samford slides to 0-1 on the young season while Troy heads back home at 1-0.

"What a way to start a season," Samford coach Carley Kuhns said. "I thought for the most part we came to battle. You give up that many offensive rebounds, it is hard to win a basketball game and the crazy thing is that we still had chances at the end of the game."

The opening night lineup for the Bulldogs featured the fivesome of Andrea Cournoyer, Sussy Ngulefac, Kathleen Wheeler, Sanaa Redmond and freshman Alyssa Tarpley

Cournoyer led the Bulldogs with 25 points and nine rebounds on the evening. The senior connected on five threes in the game, which was one off her career-high of six.

Joining Cournoyer in double figures for the Bulldogs, Ngulegfac poured in 13 points and grabbed eight boards before fouling out.

Tarpley scored eight points including a pair of treys in her collegiate debut, while Cydney Rivera added a pair of points in her Bulldog debut.

Wheeler scored seven and Redmond netted five to round out the Samford starting lineup.

Samford opened the game on a 7-0 run before Troy scored 17 of the next 23 points to take a 17-13 lead after the first quarter.

Fueled by a pair of Cournoyer threes, the Bulldogs ended the first half on a 9-0 run to battle back and take a 25-23 advantage into the locker room at the break.

Both offenses exploded in the third quarter for a combined 37 points in the 10-minute frame. Despite Cournoyer scoring six of Samford's 12 points in the quarter, the Bulldogs were down 45-40 heading into the fourth.

Samford erased a seven-point Troy advantage in the fourth to take a 59-58 lead on a Ngulefac layup with 35 seconds left in regulation.

Troy closed the thriller on an 8-3 run over the final 17 seconds for the 66-62 win.

Samford returns to action on Nov. 10 with a road showdown at SEC foe Vanderbilt. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be streamed on SEC Network+.
