Glover’s Late Jumper Lifts Bulldogs To 100-99 Win Over VMI In Overtime Thriller

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford sophomore guard Ques Glover hit a jump shot with 1.2 seconds left to give the Bulldogs' men's basketball team a 100-99 overtime win over VMI Thursday night in the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford improved to 17-9 overall and 7-7 in Southern Conference play with the win. The Bulldogs have won six of their last seven games. VMI falls to 15-12 overall and 8-7 in the league.

Glover led Samford with 26 points and a career-high 10 assists for his first career double-double. Jermaine Marshall had 22 points and six rebounds, while Logan Dye had 17 points and seven rebounds. Cooper Kaifes added 14 points for Samford.

"The last four minutes of the game, that's what we have to win, and we've become adept at finding ways to win," Samford head coach Bucky McMillan said. "Adversity in the game, we overcame a lot of it. Ques Glover, you talk about the shot he made at the end, he had 26 points, 10 assists and one turnover. How much better has our team gotten? We just played an overtime game against the No. 3 team in the league, and we only had 11 turnovers in the whole game. Earlier in the year, we couldn't dribble across half court without turning the ball over. We're limiting our turnovers and playing great basketball. I'm proud of the improvement of the team."

VMI was led by Jake Stephens with a career-high 39 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Bonham had a career-high 31 points, and Honor Huff added 10 points for the Keydets.

VMI jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with 14:04 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Stephens. Samford fought back to tie the game at 15-15 with 10:01 to go in the first half after a basket by Marhsall. VMI built a six-point lead at 30-24 with 5:56 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Sean Conway.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to three points at 32-29 with 4:58 to go in the opening half following a three-pointer by Kaifes. VMI opened up a 40-33 lead with 3:34 left before halftime following a three-pointer by Stephens. Samford fought back to cut the lead to one point at 40-39 late in the half, and VMI took a 42-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.

VMI's Stephens started the second half off with a three-pointer to push the lead to six points at 45-39 with 19:14 to go in regulation. Samford came back to cut the lead to one point at 45-44 with 17:30 to go after a layup by Marshall. The Bulldogs took a 50-48 lead with 16:38 to go after a three-pointer by Dye. VMI's Huff and Stephens hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Keydets at 54-50 lead with 15:38 left.

The Bulldogs extended to a seven-point lead at 67-60 with 11:18 to go after a three-pointer by Glover. VMI then went on a 7-0 run to knot the score at 67-67 with 8:43 to go following a layup by Bonham.

The Keydets came back to take a 78-77 lead with 5:05 to go following a layup by Huff. Samford then retook the lead at 79-78 on two free throws by Marshall with 4:42 to go. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes. Samford tied the score at 88-88 on two free throws by Marshall with 1:06 to go. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way and the teams headed to overtime knotted at 88-88.

The teams went back-and-forth throughout the overtime period. With Samford leading, 98-97, VMI's Bonham hit two free throws to give the Keydets a 99-98 lead with eight seconds left, setting the stage for Glover's game-winning shot.
