Men’s Hoops To Host UNCG In Key SoCon Showdown Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 - The Samford men's basketball team (17-9, 7-7 SoCon) will remain at home to host the UNCG Spartans (16-11, 8-5 SoCon) Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center. The game can be seen live on ESPN+ with Curt Bloom (PBP), Boyd Kaiser (Color) and Eric Biancalana (Sideline) calling the action. Live stats will also be available at www.SamfordSports.com.       
 
  • Samford and UNC Greensboro are meeting for the 31st time, with UNCG holding a 20-10 series lead. The teams met earlier this season on Jan. 22, with the Spartans taking a 61-58 win at the Greensboro Coliseum. 
  • The Bulldogs are coming into the game off a thrilling 100-99 overtime win over VMI Thursday evening. Ques Glover, who's last second shot won the game for Samford, led the Bulldogs with 26 points and a career-high 10 assists for his first career double-double. Jermaine Marshall had 22 points and six rebounds, while Logan Dye had 17 points and seven rebounds. Cooper Kaifes added 14 points for Samford.
  • Samford has been led in scoring so far this season by sophomore guard Ques Glover, who ranks third in the Southern Conference with an average of 19.0 points per game. Glover ranks second in the SoCon in assists per game (4.4) and sixth in free throw percentage (.825).  Jermaine Marshall ranks third in the SoCon in rebounding, grabbing 7.9 boards per contest.
  • UNCG enters Saturday afternoon's game with a record of 16-11 overall and 8-5 in SoCon play. The Spartans are coming off a 73-70 win at Chattanooga Thursday evening.  
  • UNCG has been led so far this season by De'Monte Buckingham, averaging 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Keyshaun Langley scores 9.2 points per game for the Spartans, while Bas Leyte averages 9.1 points per contest.
  • UNCG is averaging 65.2 points per game so far this season, while allowing 64.8 points per contest. 
  • Samford is averaging 76.3 points per game while also giving up 75.4 entering Saturday's game against UNCG.
  • Samford has a record of 10-2 in home games so far this season. The Bulldogs have earned home court wins over Maryville, Spring Hill, Mississippi College, Alabama A&M, Kennesaw State, Western Carolina, Mercer, Chattanooga, Wofford and VMI. The two home court losses have come to Belmont and ETSU.   
  • Samford is No. 1 in the SoCon in turnovers forced per game (14.5) and No. 2 in steals per game (8.0). The Bulldogs forced a season-high 33 turnovers versus Spring Hill.
  • Samford has made a habit of winning close games, posting a record of 6-3 in games decided by three points or less. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in overtime games this season.
  • The Bulldogs are 13-1 when leading at halftime this season and 11-4 on the year when controlling the opening tipoff.
  • Samford's bench has outscored the opposition's reserves 17 times this season, leading to a 13-4 mark in those contests.
  • Mr. Double-Double Jermaine Marshall (6-6, 225, So.) recorded his ninth double-double this season with 15 points and 10 boards in Samford's 77-74 win at ETSU last Saturday. The nine double-doubles rank second in the SoCon this season behind VMI's Jake Stephens with 10. The Akron transfer has been a force on the wing for the Bulldogs, averaging 12.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
  • Ques Glover (6-0, 180, So.) has made a remarkable impact on the Bulldogs so far this year, ranking No. 3 in the SoCon in scoring at 19.0 points per game while ranking second in the SoCon in assists at 4.4 per game. The Knoxville, Tenn., native, scored a career-high 30 points in Samford's game at The Citadel.
  • Jaden Campbell (6-5, 195, Soph.) has been a major spark for the Bulldogs, averaging 10.5 points per game, ranking 24th in the Southern Conference. The Brampton, Ontario native had a big game in Samford's 77-74 win at ETSU, contributing 15 points to the win.
  • Wesley Cardet, Jr. (6-6, 205, Fr.), one of the nation's most sought after recruits, continues to develop as the season progresses. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native is averaging 8.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He had 14 points in Samford's win over Mercer. Cardet was the No. 60 ranked player in the nation and No. 13 at his position by Rivals at West Oaks.
  • Jacob Tryon (6-11, 220, Sr.) has continued to be a presence down low for Samford this season. Tryon is currently tied for sixth in the Southern Conference in blocked shots per game, averaging 1.1 per contest. He had four blocked shots in the Bulldogs' 65-60 overtime win over Wofford.
  • In the last meeting between Samford and UNCG, played on Jan. 22 in Greensboro, N.C., the Spartans took a 61-58 win over the Bulldogs. Samford was led in the loss by Ques Glover and Logan Dye with 14 points each. Jaron Rillie added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Wesley Cardet pulled down 11 rebounds for Samford.

  • After Saturday's game, Samford will stay at home for the next two games. The Bulldogs will host The Citadel (Feb. 21) and Furman (Feb. 23) in that stretch.
