BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford men's basketball team held the UNC Greensboro Spartans to just 28 percent shooting on its way to a 55-49 win Saturday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 18-9 overall and 8-7 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs have now won seven of their last eight games. The win also ends UNCG's 12-game win streak over Samford. The Spartans fall to 16-12 overall and 8-6 in league play.
"We played great defense to hold them to 28 percent shooting from the field in that game," Samford head coach
Bucky McMillan said. "I told our guys that if you're a great team and you really want to make a run in the conference tournament, you've got to be able to win scoring 100, scoring 90, scoring 80, scoring 70 and sometimes it's only 50 or 60. Two night ago we played VMI and won 100-99 and today we won 55-49. There are a lot of positives in that game. We got a little sloppy at the end. I thought fatigue got us a little bit, but a great team finds a way to win when it's not pretty."
Ques Glover led Samford with 20 points in the win.
Logan Dye tallied 13 points for the Bulldogs.
Jaden Campbell scored nine points, while
Jermaine Marshall had seven points and 11 rebounds.
UNCG was led by Kobe Langley with 13 points and eight rebounds. Bas Leyte also had 13 points for the Spartans.
Samford jumped out to an early 9-4 lead with 15:55 to go in the first half following a three-pointer by
Cooper Kaifes. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 11 points at 17-6 with 13:05 left in the half after a three-pointer by Campbell. UNCG scored the next five points to cut the lead to 17-11 with 11:31 left following a three-pointer by Langley.
The Spartans cut the lead to four points at 19-15 with 8:52 left in the opening period after a layup by Leyte. With Samford leading, 21-17, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to push their lead to 31-17 with 2:28 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Glover. Samford held a 33-24 lead at halftime.
UNCG closed to within three points at 33-30 with 16:41 to go after a three-pointer by Langley. Samford pushed the lead back out to eight at 41-33 with 14:02 to go after a dunk by Campbell. The Spartans cut the lead to four points at 43-39 with 11:05 to go after a three-pointer by Langley.

Samford, however, made several key free throws down the stretch to pull out the 55-49 win.
Samford will stay at home for the next two games. The Bulldogs will host The Citadel (Feb. 21) and Furman (Feb. 23) in that stretch.
