Men’s Hoops Falls At Chattanooga, 70-57

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Samford men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 70-57 loss at SoCon regular season champion Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at McKenzie Arena.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 20-10 overall and 10-8 in Southern Conference play. The setback ends a six-game win streak for the Bulldogs. Chattanooga improves to 24-7 overall and 14-4 in league play.
 
In the loss, Samford was led by Jermaine Marshall with 17 points and eight rebounds. Ques Glover scored 12 points, while Logan Dye added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
 
For Chattanooga, Darius Banks led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Malachi Smith added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Mocs.
 
Chattanooga jumped put to an early 13-6 lead with 12:48 to go in the first half after a layup by K.D. Hankton. The Mocs extended their lead to 21-9 with 10:49 left in the first half after a layup by Banks.
 
Samford fought back to cut the lead to seven points at 26-19 with 5:00 left in the opening half following a three-pointer by Dye. The Bulldogs closed to within six points at 30-24 with 2:11 to go in the half after two free throws by Jacob Tryon. Chattanooga took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
In the second half, Chattanooga stretched its lead to 13 points at 43-30 with 16:22 to go after a three-pointer by Hankton. Samford then went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to four points at 45-41 with 12:27 remaining following a three-pointer by Marshall. Chattanooga, however, scored the next five points to push the lead to 50-41 with 10:21 to go after a three-pointer by A.J. Caldwell.
 
The Mocs extended their lead to 14 points at 61-47 with 5:23 to play after a three-pointer by Grant Ledford. Samford cut the lead to 10 points at 63-53 with 1:10 left after a jumper by Glover. Samford, however, could get no closer as Chattanooga closed out the 70-57 win.
 
Samford will now prepare for next week's Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Bulldogs' opponent for Saturday's quarterfinals will be released when the league releases the tournament bracket on Sunday.
