BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team split two games, falling to Boston College, 1-0, and earning a 1-0 win over Indiana State on the first day of the Bulldog Classic at the Samford Softball Stadium.
Samford now has a record of 8-3 with the split. Indiana State is now 7-4, while Boston College has a mark of 7-5.
GAME 1
Final: Boston College 1 | Samford 0
Merritt Cahoon led Samford, going 2-for-2 with a walk in the first game.
Sarah Squillace also had a hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.
McKenzie Newcomb (3-2) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford. Newcomb recorded six strikeouts in the game.
Nicole Giery drove in Boston College's lone run, going 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI. Peyton Schnackenberg (3-0) earned the win in the circle for the Eagles, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits.
The teams battled through a scoreless tie for the first five innings of the contest. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Giery homered to left-center field for the game's lone run.
GAME 2

Amanda Briskin led Samford in the day's second game, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Squillace and
Abigail Dorsett had a hit each for the Bulldogs as well.
Jordan Walters (2-0) earned the win for the Bulldogs, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits, while recording five strikeouts.
For Indiana State, Abi Chipps and Isabella Henning had one hit each. Cassi Newbanks (2-2) took the loss for the Sycamores, tossing 6.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Once again, the game remained scoreless through the first five frames. With two outs in the bottom of sixth inning, Squillace singled to start the rally. Squillace then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Briskin then singled up the middle to drive in Squillace for the eventual game-winning run.

The Samford softball team will wrap up the Bulldog Classic on Sunday. Samford is set to take on Boston College at 10 a.m. and Indiana State at 3 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium.
