BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team completed the series sweep over Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium for the Bulldog's to tie the best start to league play since joining the Southern Conference in 2009.

Timberlyn Shurbutt led Samford at the plate, combining for three hits and four RBIs on the day. Freshman
McKenzie Newcomb earned the start in the circle, allowing one run on four hits in 4.0 innings of work. Fellow freshman
Jordyn Partain finished the job for her fifth win of the season after striking out two at the plater after 12 batters faced.
Timberlyn Shurbutt and
Merritt Cahoon opened the game up in the first three innings with Shurbutt driving in two runs while Cahoon recorded a two RB single in the third to put the Bulldog up 4-0. Western Carolina eventually cut into Samford's lead in the top of the fourth after Samantha Reele fired a two-bag shot out to center field to bring home Bailey Huneycutt on third.
Jordyn Partain entered the circle for the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth, limiting the Catamounts to just one hit while stranding two on base. Partain's continued to keep WCU scoreless with two strikeouts and a ground out in the next frame before retiring the side in the top of the seventh, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 win for back-to-back sweeps in SoCon play.

The Samford softball team will take to the road for a weekend series against the Paladins of Furman University, starting with a Friday (Apr. 15) doubleheader at 1 p.m. followed by a Saturday (Apr. 16) single game at 1 p.m. with all the action taking place at Pepsi Stadium.
