BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team claimed the series sweep over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory at the Samford Softball Stadium.

The Bulldogs (26-15, 11-1 SoCon) offense continued to shine in game three of the series with seven hits against the Mocs (21-23, 5-7 SoCon) that included a multi-hit game from freshman
Gwynnie Hornibrook (2-for-3). Freshman pitcher
McKenzie Newcomb improved to 18-7 in the circle after giving up just one run on eight hits after 31 batters faced. The Meridianville, Ala., native threw her 17th complete game for the Bulldogs, retiring four batters at the plate for 134 strikeouts on the season.
Samford found themselves down early, 1-0, in the top of the first inning when Chattanooga's Acelynn Sellers singled to left field to plate Emily Coltharp on third, but the Bulldogs were quick to respond in the home half of the second inning. With a 2-0 count, freshman
Gwynnie Hornibrook launched a two-run shot out of left field for her fourth home run on the season to put Samford in front, 2-1.
The Bulldogs extended their lead by one run in the bottom half of the next inning with senior
Timberlyn Shurbutt doubling down the left line before being driven home by
Merritt Cahoon's well-placed single to right field. Samford capped the scoring in the bottom of the fourth off a UTC fielding error for sophomore
Ansley Yantis to make it home. Through the next 2.5 innings,
McKenzie Newcomb allowed no runs on four hits while stranding five Mocs on base to give Samford a 4-1 victory and the Sunday sweep.
